Ok You jet experts I am wanting to fly a jet. I have been flying for about 3 years....I am ready....Just for the beginning...I saw the Ultrafly F-16 in our hobby store and it really got my interest....If I where to get it I would put a brushless on it..here is my problem...
1. I was going to buy and ready to buy the Alfa Mig 15 with the Brushless set up but saw this (F-16 Ultrafly) and wondered if it would fly just as fast and real fun to fly....HELP...I need help making a choice?? thanks
Bill

I've had the Alfa Mig in my fighter group for about a year and it's one you can always take out and fly with little fuss. My buddy StRyKeR has yet to be impressed with his F-16 although he's still putting it together, I'm hoping for a good result as I really want the SU-27, but not if it's a piece of crap.

I have the Alfa Mig and the Ulttrafly Hawk and the F16 on order. The mig flys lovely but can be hard to launch like any EDF. The F16 is abailable in a brushless version with motor included at a good price. I would but it and see how you go. The CG needs to be set 15 mm in front of that specified in the instructions however

My Mig Handlaunches like a dream, I can stand and give it a light chuck and "Off it Goes Into the Wild Blue Yonder" Landing it the thing glides FOREVER so start your approach WAY BACK

Read this first. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=337565

Comparing the Alfa Mig and the Ultrafly F-16 is like Apples and Oranges, the Alfa is a EDF while the F-16 is a pusher-prop. The only bad thing I can say about the F-16 is the building Instructions STINK...

Buy Both of them :)

THanks guys.....could you tell me if the F16 flys real fast with the brushless and is the stall speed slow or high??? I guess we are still waiting for the results on the F16..to new of an airplane I guess......

Neither one of these jets will fly "Real Fast" There foamy parkflyers, bit the F-16 would probably have an edge on speed. If you want something that flys in the 80-100 mph range, you should consider a Warbirds-RC HET F-18 (http://www.warbirds-rc.com) or another mini-fan type jet. I doubt if the Mig or the F-16 will see over 75mph

Yeah; I have not flown mine yet but I would think the
max speed of the F16 is about 80mph.

WHat is the max speed of the mig with brushless himax set up like eflight has....I was figuring 70 to 75.......does anyone know of any video from the f 16

Look at the bottom of the page for both F16 and SU 27's video, stock
motors though (very old videos)

Thanks guys.....you guys have been a real big help......well good information...I wanted someone to say "DONT BUY THAT PLANE THAT PLANE SUCKS or THIS PLANE IS MUCH MUCH BETTER"...but they are two different but simular planes...........I think I am still going with the mig because it can take off Right From Grass....I think that looks to cool.......I think..I am sure I will change my mind...

Just be aware that the Alfa Mig has problems with wings snapping off in High "G" turns or dives, there is a thread here that shows the modifications you need to make to the plane so it is safe to fly.

THe Video of the Ultrafly F-16 is the stock BRUSHED Motor, and Ni-Mh battery packs, Lipo's and brushless motors will make it fly faster

Hi,

The production version F-16 is 10% faster than the one in the video if using the stock 400 motor. If you dump in a 180 watt power brushless motor, the speed may go over 75mile/h but you need more stronger support on the wing. I mean thicker carbon rod like 5mm. We have abused the model with 200 watt and it is much faster than those 200watt EDF f-16!
By the way, if you don't have a radar gun to find out the speed, it is usually much slower than you think!
The F-16 in stock 400 motor is only 40-47 miles in level fly depends on LIPO or Ni-Mh. But many people thought that is flying at 55-60 miles.

Thanks guys..some really good stuff....I always wanted to buy a ducted fan plane so I think I am getting the Mig...but man this F-16 (Looks and flight) is killing me.....I am not very good with directions and I hear the F16 directions suck...............Oh to have millions......

Hey Thor,

If you look up the other Ultrafly F-16 thread, in the first post there is a coupon code for Tower which works out to about 30% off on the plane :) I used it a week ago and it's still effective, so give it a shot. You can buy the stock plane, delivered for about $58.00 one heck of a good deal in my opinion. As far as the instructions go, I just printed out everyone elses comments, and I'll follow them when I build the jet, and I'll probably add a few comments of my own too. I'm sure Charlie is working on a better instruction sheet, which they can load-up on the website.

I have both the Alfa Mig-15 and the UF F-16. I like them both, although they are very different. I find the F-16 harder to fly due to a very fast roll rate, and mine is also faster than the Mig-15 (I use the MPJet 25/26 mk2 in the Mig and the UF B-series brushless in the F-16).

The thing that I don't like about the Mig-15 (applies to all Alfa kits) is that it is so flimsy. It is built very very light, and that's why it performs so well. But a little too tight grip with your fingers on launch, or set it down on the bench with some tools laying around- will result in a dent in the very thin foam. It is soo flimsy I have actually given up flying the Mig and use it just for display.. but that's another story.

By the way if you talk to Alfa Mig-15 owners, you will be surprised how many there are who have their second, or sometimes third model. You could interpret that as 'it flies great but wears out quickly'.

I'm tempted by the Ultrafly F-16.

Would the following motor be man enough to fly well? I can't get my head around the power of brushless motors?!?

I think it is the equivalent to a 400ish size. Any help?

If you are lucky enough to find an F-16, go for it.

They are getting like hens teeth, but fly great if you ditch the instructions and replace dodgy hardware with good stuff and take care in building... They launch really easy if you have tons of power - mine current one has 300W in the back and you basically point the nose upwards and let go. It don't hang around :D.

Power is all about Watts, and Watts = current x voltage. Most motor companies nowadays have power charts on their information pages so you can see what sort of power you'll get on what battery / prop on each motor. Its the size / pitch of the prop that control the current, so a bigger prop pulls more current and produces more power.

The stock F-16 needs around a 100W : lb power : weight ratio to fly well, and as for that motor, it probably would fly it, but only just. I purchased a pair of that exact motor to see if they were any good, and both maxed out 120W. They are a replacement for a geared s300 / direct drive s400, but towards the bottom of the performance range.

At an AUW of 1.3 - 1.4lb, you'll probably have a sad F-16 in the air. It's a go fast plane and wants a lot of power. A LittleScreamer parkjet motor is ideal for this kind of model.

Can you name a good mid performance (Reasonably sporty) Motor/prop/speed controller combination I may want to try out for the F-16?

The park jet or super park jet will send the F-16 into low orbit on an APC 6x5.5.

I was using the one of the original design parkjets that I got direct from Scott
on my F-16 It is a great little motor for the plane. with a TB18 and a 3 cel tp1320 15c pack it was a nice light setup. Under 16oz. AUW.
Unfortunately I've never had any good luck with the little screamer motors for some reason. I don't want to get into a debate about quality but I certainly won't be buying another LS motor at 50.00 a whack any more.
If you can find a good economical 30-40gram 150w-200w with a 25 amp esc and a 1300-1800 20c battery you could still stay around that 16-18oz mark and have a great flyer.

Ultrafly F-16 is not easy to fly and hand-launch is a high chance of crash almost every time. On the other hand the Ultrafly SU-27 is easy to fly and hand-launching is also easy. I'd have to recommend against the F-16.

I'll admit they are not the easiest thing in the world to throw, but if the CG is correct (i.e. at 75mm instead of the instructions 90mm), 100w : lb+, with three running steps into the wind and a good push with the nose < 30 degrees high and the F-16 is off like a rocket - even a 24oz semi-glassed lardball like mine!
