Would it be possible for a know-nothing guy(R/C modeler) to follow a set of instructions to build a brush or brushless ESC? And, if so, where might a guy get such instruction. It would have to be very step by step, i.e. solder 2 inch long #22 copper stranded wire to Pos. side of goomaglatchy, etc. Whaddaya think?

I've never seen any instructions quite that detailed and most modern ESCs need you to do things like program microcontrollers so the start up costs can be high as most people don't have a programmer and all the tools just lying about.
But can I ask why you want to build an ESC ? Since you're obviously not an electronics hobbyist you won't have a box full of parts to use up so it will certainly be a lot more expensive than buying an ESC. If you are interested in learning about electronics then I'd suggest starting with something a bit simpler than an ESC.

Slipstick, See, that's why a neophyte should always ask before jumping in. What I get from your advice is that I'd be better off to leave it alone and buy one. Thanks for that. Will do.

hi all, its may be my first post on this forum.
Ok. i just ended making of The ESC for brushed motor.
controller PIC16F684
H-bridge
fpwm - 8kHz
Programm writen on C.
If anyone want documentation ( shematic diagramm, PCB layout, and programm source code ) just write here.
Sorry for my bad english. Hmmm i have website where i discribed this ESC but site written on russian language. But all documentation are free for download from it.

three links in the bottom of the page are
schematic diagram
PCB layout
C source code (remarks are in english)

Hey Guy, I looked at your schematic but don't see any english involved. You are one up on most of us 'cause we don't (most of us) speak 2 languages as you do. Would you consider selling a couple of your brush ESC's, and, if so, what do you want for them, and what is the amp limit?

heh
i must speak in 3 languages in same time:
hebrew english and russian, russian - motherlanguage
Schematic not in final state.
upper fet can give 20amps at 40volt max
bottom fet can give 40 amps at 30volts max Rds=30mOhm;
all parts of this schematic was free for me
PICs i received for free as developer, over parts i taked from dead moverboards.
Hmmm, what is subject to change?
I want add to programm more straight rules to prevent glitch ppm pulses cause a run.
I need to correct Watchdog behaviour.
I want to add compensation for battery discharge voltage difference. (keep speed same at full and discharged cells).
And of course i want write a some words in english for all of you in my website.

I'd love to see the schematics/source code if you don't mind sharing them?

Bluefly;
This stuff is not magic. If you want to try to build it yourself, more power to you!
Here's a site with information on 3 brushed ESCs that don't require programming.
http://www.capable.on.ca/rcstuff/ . Stefan Vorkoetter has been building and sharing electric rc stuff for quite a while (years). He also shares how to make your own printed circuit boards.

Rick, Thanks a bunch, guy, I'll look at it and see if I can give it a shot! Rick
