I had a chance to check out the embeded systems conference in San Francisco today. I felt like a kid in a candy store there were many interesting demonstrations, new products and development tools. One of the most interesting developements are the small long range transmiters. Boards that are the size of a quater and can transmit at 100mW. I also saw some of the latest processors in action, many of them were being shown of by exhibiting their capability of rendering 3D graphics. Companies were giving out all sorts of goodies but I passed on all of them (to many tshirts already) except for one. Atmel was giving out their AVR butterfly which a a AVR processor and a bunch of peripherals like LCD display, speaker, RS232, light meter etc.. It is basically a development board in a small business card sized package.

If you have a few free hours and are in the San Francisco area this week I recomend that you check out the conference.

Spent the day there too. I was amazed at how much smaller it has gotten compared to prior years. Chalk that up to mergers and closures.

The Keynote speech by Scott Adams (Mr. Dilbert) was worth the trip. His one hour motivational talk was an absolute riot! And the banned/unpublished cartoons that he put up on the overhead screens were priceless.

I left with a gratis AVR Butterfly board too. I skipped all the free tote bags, keychains, and ball point pens. :)

Sounds like a fantastic event, shame I am half way around the globe!
I would love to have heard the speach, Scott Adams is brilliant.

The smallest modules I saw were made by MaxStream their Xbee family tree is the the one to look for
http://www.maxstream.net/zigbee.php

Their products are based of a protocol called ZigBee

Thanks for pointing this out. I ordered one from Digikey (ATAVRBFLY-ND) for $19.99

Looks like its been available for a little over a year and a half and there is lots of web info on how to hack it. (Google AVR Butterfly)

With 512 KBytes of EEPROM and ADC, it looks good for a data logger.

More info: http://www.coe.uncc.edu/~jmconrad/AVR/AVR_Butterfly_Introduction.pdf
Or go to http://www.atmel.com and search for Butterfly.
