Is there a simple way to add v-tail mixer to a transmitter? I have a Hitec Focus sitting around that would be more useful if I could do v-tails.

Kristopher,
If you are taking about the Hitec Focus in either 2 or 3 channel form (the single stick radios) it already does V-Tails or Elevons. The 4 and 6 channel Focus radios do not.

There are add-on mixers available for less than $20 that you plug between the receiver and servos. Wattage makes one that I know of and there are others as well.

I imagine that if you do a Google search for "T-Tail mixer" you can probably find a lot. As a matter of fact, I did, and here is one for $12:

Actually I have one of the older models that does not have the mixing built in, unless it is hidden. I have seen the add-on mixers, but space wise it would be easier to do it at the tx.

I agree, it is sure handy to have it on the TX. Both the Wattage and GWS mixers are VERY small, but I still don't like having to add any weight that I don't have to in the airplane.

I haven't seen any DIY projects that add a mixer on the TX. I'll be interested to see if you find something though.

As a last option you can always turn your TX at 45 degrees and mix that way but if you use ailerons than thats going to be a problem ... .... and ... people may look strangely at you ... pointing fingers and all that stuff.
Or you can try and cut out the joystick and rotate it by 45 degrees.
Software wise I haven't seen anything for TXes.
The easiest method is to get a premade mixer that you use on the RX, you can even make your own http://www.geocities.com/ilufa/MIXER_E.htm by Philip Sun ( ilufa ) . His project uses a PIC12C50X a capacitor and connectors. Eliminating the connectors and soldering it on the RX it should add less than 1gm.
Good Luck

I actually did add simple V-tail mixing to this same radio when it first came out. I used junk I had lying around, thus four of the resistors are surface mount types (but not used in a surface mounted way!). They are hard to see in the photo. As built, this worked out well for me. Here are some details if you want to try this.

Jonh Nooyen had design a good circiut for transmitter
This is what I install in my Futaba T4VF
