I'm looking at the NES Large, but I really need to put all the $ I can into replacing the radio gear I lost last year... never did find that plane. Will a Dynaflight Heavy Duty do the trick instead? Tower is offering $25 off $175 orders which would make a pretty good deal for me since I'm gonna buy a radio system too. Thanks JS

I've built two, never ever close to that weight. My Grand Esprit weighs 52 oz's. But, back to your question. You will need at least 7/16od for "0" wind flying. I have a 3/8" Holloday hi-start on eBay that would work in a pinch(would have to have close to 5mph to lift that much weight) My hi-start will pull 23#'s
How strong are those wings?

That is a bit heavy. How much lead have you put in the nose?

75oz was a guess. I have not actually weighed it... all I know is the darn thing feels really heavy in comparison to the sailplanes I have built. I picked it up second hand... really nicely built, but the detachable tail group the builder installed warrented at least 1/2 # in the nose. So for the post I just added a pound to what I thought should be the maximum weight of a built up that size (<60oz). Most likely it's around 65oz. I have thought of just glueing the tailgroup and removing all the metal, but since I live in a windy area I'll just view it as preballasted.
How strong is the wing? I guess I'm gonna find that out one way or the other. I've been flying Skybench "Birds" so long that I forgot to worry about the wing folding... Thanks

I can not in good faith reccomend the Dynaflight. Even though listed as "heavy duty", I found them to be kind of weak. The quality of the kite line is thin. They are OK and I have launched my Paragon off them, but the NSP one I own works much better.
I know the price is much better on the Dynaflight, but I think you will find yourself replacing it due to breaking rubber and breaking lines in a year or so. The Dynaflight one I have had has lasted 7 years now.

My Legend 3M is close to, or perhaps heavier than the weight of your plane.
I have used the Dynaflite HD to launch my Spirit 2M. I don't think it will send your plane up very well. Maybe a BOT 3M floater, but not a plane that heavy. Although with a good breeze you could probably get it into the air.
NESAil Large will launch it fine. I have launched my 3M legend with one. In under 5 mph winds the launch off the large is OK but not super, however you say you have a breezy field so you should be fine. The Large is the standard hi-start in our sailplane club so I have used other peoples Large on occasion.
I use the Xlarge and she goes up with authority even with little wind. I launch with about 26 pounds of pull, as I recall.
I also launch my Spirit 2M of the Xlarge at about 12 pounds.
If you have a breeze to work with, the large will do you just fine!! Go for the XL if you like a powerful hi-start.
