Good news: SmartPropo works OK with RFG2 on XP.
The registry patch is attached (rfg2.reg). Here is the dump:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\V ID_045E&PID_1100]
"OEMName"="SmartPropo Game Device"
"OEMData"=hex:01,00,08,10,0a,00,00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\V ID_045E&PID_1100\Axes]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\V ID_045E&PID_1100\Axes\6]
"Attributes"=hex:00,00,00,00,01,00,33,00

Some explanations:
- VID_045&PID_1100 is the smartpropo joystick instance
We must modify its exposed capabilities in OEMData, then add the subkeys "Axes" and "6", and add the binary value "Attributes".
You can find some information about all that there:

Shaul Eiz .. took over the development of Smartpropo. Here is the last version.

http://n.ethz.ch/student/mmoeller/fms/alpha/smartpropoplus.zip

(les than 400k)

The 'README' file:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SmartPropoPlus - Using your Transmitter as a Joystick for FMS

This package contains 5 different files named winmm.dll.
They are located in separate folders under folder "bin"
You have to copy appropriate file into the folder where file FMS.exe resides.

If you are using any PPM transmitter (which is the most common) - copy the file that is
inside "PPM"
If you use a Futaba PCM transmitter - copy the file that is inside "Futaba_PCM"
If you use a JR PCM transmitter - copy the file that is inside "JR_PCM"
If you use a SANWA or Airtronics PCM transmitter - copy the file that is inside
Sanwa_PCM1 or Sanwa_PCM2 according to the modulation type.

If you are not sure, try all 5 files one-by-one until you succeed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the zip, you will find a PDF: 'SmartPropoPlus' giving very good technical explanations. Please read it.

Sources are included, as with the original smartpropo version.

PS: Shaul Eiz .. is looking for a hosting website that would provide fast response time in case of updates. Please contact me if you are willing to host this zip. Thanks.

Phil.

work fine ? I removed the dll file but it still crashes now. I reinstalled FMS on XP. no luck.
Have to fly on win2k professional for now.

by the way the crashes happen only on my Laptop. not on my PC. It runs fine on XP SP2.

new alpha version of smartpropo (this is v 2.1.0, will later replace 2.0.3 )

http://www.geocities.com/shaul_ei/SmartPropoPlus.html

Commens from Shaul Eiz.. (the author):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try and comment.
Highlights:
- Single DLL controlled by a GUI console.
- Manual & Automatic shift selection with improved PPM encoding.
Since this is an Alpha release I'll be happy to learn what you think about it and receive bug reports.
The link is the usual SmartPropoPlus homepage - take the 2.1.0 option and do read the documentations!

Hope you'll like it.

Usage of smartpropo as transmitter to windows joystick interface WITHOUT fms?

Phildc

Niek, here the answer from Shaul:

----------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry - SPP has not proven to be useful for anything but FMS since most other games do not seem to use the standard WINMM joystick interface but rather go directly to the joystick-driver.

If there are people that are happy with version 2.0.3 for other products other than FMS I will make sure the next version still supports them. Are there any?

What Mr. Seki started doing was to create a WDM version of SmartPropo which is a whole different ballgame - it is a driver that plugs directly to the Windows OS (Incompatible between OS's by definition). I might move to that one day - but we have to bear in mind that it is a risky thing that might damage (if there is a bug) the whole system on the user's machine, and, that we will have to write a new driver for every version of Windows (98, NT, 2000, XP 2003).

If this gentleman is still unhappy with my reply - please refer him to me.

Several sim interfaces (those origionals with the dongle) express themselves in the joystick control panel.
I understand that with those sims (with dongle attached) it is possible to use (a) joystick(s) for the 2nd player option.
Par example with ikarus AFPD.

Microsoft flight sim uses also the joystick listed in the control panel

MPX has a usb TX dongle which is also to be found in the joystick panel.

So if one could use the transmitter through smartpropo for std joystick input?
