Hitec, PPJOY, Realflight G2,PIC serial interface fix

There have been some problems with getting channel 3 to work in Realflight G3 when you are connecting a Hitec (some Futabas) transmitter to your computer with a serial interface. Typically this type of cable works fine for FMS, but Realflight does not see the throttle through this interface. Here is how you get it to work:

You need to download a virtual joystick. Look up PPJOY and Picjoy and download them both. Here is where you can find out how to install the program: http://www.tti-us.com/sim/picjoy.html

Once you have that program running add a virtual joystick You have to have Picjoy running and you have to press the Go button to get it started. Use this setup for a Hitec transmitter. Mine is a Laser 4 with the following settings:

Go to the Parallel port joystick applet in the control panel.

Select the virtual joystick and hit the mapping button. Next, select.modify the mapping for this controller and then hit next.

Once this is done leave Picjoy running whenever you use Realflight and make sure the go button is on. Now you should calibrate the joystick in Realflight. Select the virtual joystick in the calibration menu. Select stick mapping to “custom.” Next hit calibrate and follow all of the steps. You may not see some activity from the joystick yet, but don’t worry. After you have done this hit the advanced button in the calibration menu and make the following changes to the channels. Don’t worry if the text description does not match your inputs:

Channel to Modify Channel controlled by
Channel 1 Ailerons- to Joystick 1-up/down
Channel 2 Elevator- to Joystick 2 up/down
Channel 3 Throttle- to Joystick 2 left/right
Channel 4 Rudder- to Joystick 1 right/left

After you have made the changes go ahead and calibrate the transmitter again in Realflight. Your controller should now be working!!!!
-The Futaba fix should be similar with exception to the last two steps. You would need to play around to get these to work for your controller.

I hope these steps save you the many hours of research that I have labored over!!!

Does this work with realflight g3?

Nope - G3 uses's its own hardware that also acts as the copy protection

EDIT: the patch does not circumvent the copy protection, you still need to use your interlink controller's serial to get the program to run.
this was just a simple "benign hack" i had to come up with when my little brother spilled soda on my interlink controller since Hobbico wont sell you an interlink on its own.

true, it may perhaps be used somehow to circumvent the copy protection but that isnt what I did.

In answer to the original question the software is designed to look for an interlink controller, so without it a normal joystick interface won't work.
