Hi guys!

The Warsaw Pact is getting worried about the upcoming numbers of western fighters in parks, footballfields, fields and airfields. We must answer the threat. According to our new policy, we release information about out new project, our answer to the threat we have noticed. We have started to build new parkjet-fighter, the Mikojan-Gurevitsh MiG-23.

Generalissimus Kimmo :D

Many Thanks to Steve of his great desings and giving inspirations to build and design new models. Here's my project, the MiG-23. As MJH earlier mentioned rumours about MiG coming to challenge Phantoms, it will happen soon. The project has started long time ago in my mind, and last friday I started to cut depron. Maiden might be next weekend. The plane will be done by the same methods as Steve's models, in the beginning powerpack will be GWS 350 and 8*KAN650. Controls flaperons and elevator, option for rudder. Wingspan is 100cm, not yet swing wings, length about 110cm. Maybe in the future when Steve have finished his F-14, Mr Sergei Uspatoff might deisign swing-wing for MiG... And about plans, will be available in the near future. I have Microstation V8 CAD in my home computer, I just need to switch my brains in that position that I can use it, in my work I use V7J..

Here's some pictures of the model, parts have been taped together to give some inspiration, sorry about pic quality; it's a cellphone camera, but I don't own better..

Cool stuff Koha. Only problem is where am I gona hanger them all? You can one on one against my MirageIII when its done! Thats about the same vintage. Here is a pic of my friend Peters Mig29 for inspiration. Not foam but an awesome model, very fast and weighs three times as much as my F18 Park Flyer.

Yep, that big rudder and lower fin makes the plane look like heavy and mean machine. BTW, the lower fin will be retractable to avoid damage in landigs. No new pics so far, I have been glueing doublers and so on, tonight first fuselageparts will be glued together.

Found exellent 3d-drawings from the russian pages http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw_fn.html#7 , lots of drawigs for the future..

I upgraded MiG's engine before the plane is finished. I went to a hobbyshop and bought Typhoon Micro 15/13 and Tsunami 30A controller. Battery will be ETEC 1700 3S lipo. Micro 6 would be just enough, but 15/13 was about the same price and weight's only totally with controller about 50 grams more. In weight, Micro 15 = GWS 350 with C-gear, 200 watts in 500g model=great fun!! :D :D

We need a MiG amongst these other deproners!

Looking great, Koha! Can't wait to see this bird when it's done. You're right about the overabundance of Western fighter park jets--this will be a very welcome sparring partner for them! ;)

Thank You Steve!

The MiG-23 was about only easy plane to design, since MiG-25 is so close to F-15, others have quite complex shapes and I wanted to have this bird to fly soon. But I have heard rumours about MiG-21F...

Did not fly last weekend, I was too busy doing something else last week, but it's on the way. Did test fly the powerpack with my GWS A-10, AUW 600g, static thrust about 900g and currentdraw 16A, unlimited vertical!!! Slowfly no problem, pitchspeed is quite low, 40mph.

Also I measured the plane, wingspan 100cm, 39,4 inches, length 118cm without nosecone pitot-tube(?), 45,7 in, wingarea 14,2 dm2, 220 sq in, estimated wingload (AUW 500g, 17,6oz) 11,3 oz/ft2. And engine exhaust 75mm inside, just enough for EDF-75...

EDIT: upgraded fuselage length

Some news about my project..
I've had terrible week at my work, too many procedures to design an new ATC's to give lessons about procedure designing, but good thing is that I am learning how to use Microstation V8. Tonight I'll keep on building the plane, and while the glue is drying I'll try to draw the plans. I just learned how to get referencefiles visible in V8, and after that drawing plans will be almost like a piece of cake, already have found out some changes I need to make for the "serial production" model.

MJH was flying his Alfa MiG-15 today with BL and 3s lipo, weather was pretty cold but MiG was HOT, I need to fix my Huckebein soon..

Todays news:

Nothing that you could see, but I made engine mount out of aluminium-profile, or in fact two, the first was a test-mount :o , second was the real thing. And I test flew it with my A-10. It works. And some other small things, didn't work with the plans today. About painting, I have thought two possible paint-schemes but one thing is sure: red stars and numbers 22 just below cockpit. Possible paintschemes are top green and bottom light grey (I think that I have seen something like this somewhere) or top green-light brown (like desert sand) camo and bottom light grey or sky blue. Depends on what kind of paint I can get. Feel free to give ideas!

Buildingpics:

First 3 pics of retracting fin; thin plywood spring to keep it out when flying, and when landing it will go inside fuselage
4th: general pic of fuselage and lots of doublers, perhaps in serial production models some of them can be taken off
5th: just general pic of the plane..

Here's the must picture: I just had to make a red star out of red tape and stick it on the wing.. :D

Phantoms and Eagles, be prepared, Flogger is coming...

No news more about tonight, I just decided that I'll go to bar and have some fun, yesterday was BUI and DUI (D=design!!), tomorrow more (building). Viva vino tinto!! (and kossu and GT) :p

Been building and drawing plans..

Finished with enginemount. I had to do it twice, first testmount and then the real thing.. Also found canopy inside a piece of bluefoam, or inside two pieces, first was testcanopy.. So far I have been doing this project in my small apartments kitchen, soon I need to move it to our club to finish. That means sanding and for some strange reason I do not like to do it in my kitchen..

I measured wingarea excatly, and V8 says 13.908474 dm2, 215.58178 sq in. A bit less than I thought but very close to Steve's T38.

Pics: 1 and 2: Enginemount, first was piece of aluminium and wood, now it's two pieces of aluminium. Micro 15/13 should be enough for this plane.
3: plans at this moment. EDIT better pic

Went to see the project myself. The MiG is much bigger than You would think. Steve's F-18 was much bigger than I thought when I build it, but this is really Big Ugly mf.
Still, it will be around the same weight as other parkjets.
Fuselage has some dimensions and the fins are enormous!
Will be an eyecatcher when it flies...

MiG will be soon ready for maiden, just few hours of work to do. It could be ready now, but I found something else to do tonight: I bought new transmitter, Futaba 8UAPS/UAFS. Used but in exellent condition and reasonable price. The big thing is that now I have another freq and with MJH we have two tx capable of flaperon-mix, so on Easter there will be MiG VS Phantom!!

Hi

Now she is almost ready to fly, just couple more hours work to do.. I moved the project yesterday to our flying club to finish it. Yesterday I had troubles with first thought radios, but I found out that my Tsunami ESC is U/S :( . Hopefully I'll get new one on thursday, if not I can use MJH's ESC for maiden, and maybe against Gripen.. Today's status: glued wings onto fuselage, fuselage is almost finished; it's missing front top cover, turtledeck and rudder. Rearfuse is finished; rounded and sanded. Radios are installed and tx is programmed. CG seems to be easy to fix, locating battery will give enought tolerance. It seems to became heavier than I planned, AUW is closing 600g, but I think thai it can handle that extra weight, anyway I'm having plenty of power and thrust. Here's some pics, during Easter I can send better quality pics, and hopefully a video of maiden, so far enjoy the great quality of Nokia.. :p

1: controls are moving; flaperons and elev, elev to flap mix
2: radios installed, wing being glued, maybe a set of lead-batteries would work?
3-5: MiG-23 VS MJH's F-4

Mar 24, 2005, 12:44 PM
YES!!! MiG flew first flight today, and I can say it was succesful!! AUW about 600g, 21oz, didn't have a scale with me. First flight was MiG unfinished, turtledeck still missing, but isn't it a tradition that jets fly first flight unfinished? Few minutes after MJH's Gripen landed my MiG took off, and she flew great and looks big in air. Elevator was very efficient and ailerons too. Elev maybe little bit too sensitive, but ailerons were OK, rollrate in "cruise" about 1.5sec/360deg, in slow flight controlling is easy. Need to adjust elevator and then she is ready for serialproduction. CG was about 4 cm behind CF-tubes in fuselage, and that was good position. Because MiG has higher aspect ratio it will not go to high AOA, it turns, and it stalls in a way that you will notice, but it can fly really slow. And with my powerpack it climbs unlimited vertical. Hardest thing flying it today was losing planes attitude few times; cloudy sky and snow on ground, and MiG is in wintercamo, depronwhite with red stars.. Almost crashed it once  , but lots of power saved it. I am waiting to get some pics of the maiden, or maybe MJH will post them directly here, this time not cellphonecam pics. Videoclips will be available soon also. I'll let you know when and where they are available to see.

More: Just flew second flight with MiG and controls were adjusted, and it flew better than during first flight, it will give some hard time to Hornets, Eagles, Phantoms and Talons!

Now I'll start to work with the plans, if I have any time left after flying the MiG, be patient, they will be ready soon..

Thanks very much to Steve giving inspiration to this kind of planes, these are so much fun to build and fly!

I was there to see it after my not so succesfull Gripen maiden.
Mig was good enough to make a grown man giggle...
I really flew with authority.

Very Cool, I mean the plane not the weather you are flying in. Looks like I will build one as soon as plans are available. Looks like no longer will the NATO jets rule the skies above Arizona.

Crikey, no wonder you almost lost orientation with that snow camo paint job! That MIG looks great. The camo paintjob you have picked will look fantastic. Ive just heard (or is that made up?) that Australia is about to recover some MIG23s from the backyard of a Finish aeormodeller to use while we wait for our F35JSFs, so we can expect some MIG23s in Australian Park going head to head with our F18 soon.
Well done!

Thanks for the comments!

I was about to fly MiG on monday, but I had one drawback: rh aileron servo was broken, maybe those barn-door-size ailerons are a bit too much for egrandbuys $10 servos.. New one is coming, hopefully today, this time $20 servos by RCM. LH servo was broken before maiden, and yes, I learned, always use high quality servos. Last satudray I flew together with MJH's Gripen, that was hot also, will give hard time to MiG. Weather was great, calm wind and sunny, too bad we didn't have anyone taking video of that duel. But kids were happy, so were their parents. Today I'll go to hobbystore to buy some paints, that white camo is quite hard to see.. I hope that soon I can get better video of my MiG, lower, faster and more dangerous than ever :D

Mig-project has been on hold for some time, I have been very busy last couple of weeks. The plane is now under first overhaul and paintjob, soon I'll have time to continue with the plans. I noticed some changes that I need to make with the plans, it needs some reinforcement inside fuselage. One week ago I was in volunteer militaryexercise, and my job was to fly target plane for aaa, and I used Mig, so now it has some "frontline" experience. I made few simulated groundattacks, and one colonel took cover :p And I thought that I wasn't even flying low!! But anyway all the big bosses were satisfied and asked if I could come again

Steve,
You should track down the old Boeing B-1 competition proposal, much nicer than the B-1B. As I remember it was something like a four engine F-14 but with a Tornado fin.
Koha, Really nice looking ship. I started drawing a Mig 23, now I'll have to find something different.Maybe one of the Russian Swing wing bombers?
Just got to finish my Me 262 first.
Has anyone thought about expanding this whole depron idea into more prop jobs? There's a huge range of WWII airplanes to go after.

Sure there are plenty of WWII planes that can be remade with Depron, but there are still so many modern and somewhat modern jets that have to be modeled right first! F-105 Thud in Depron would be cool to see!

It looks like some of the Cold War era 60's fighters are being modeled as parkjets finally, so maybe the trend is going backward in time and a logical conclusion would be the late WWII German jets. This is the Jet-pusher forum after all :)
