It's just a shame that the game developers use the DirectX graphics language for their simulators. This forces the user into an endless round of OS/graphics card/driver upgrading. Every time Microsoft comes out with a new version of DirectX, the sim producers think they have to use it.

The alternative is OGL which is used by some sim makers, notibly Aerofly Pro and for general purpose airplane sims, X-Plane. If all the sim producers would also publish OGL versions, the programs would be more easily ported to other OS's such as Linux and Mac.

The Windows monoply is more pervasive than you might think. Has M$ produced a version of DX9 for Win98 or WinME? Do you want to be forced to upgrade your OS? Well you will when there is no longer DX support for your current Windows version.

The bigger GD problem is developers who write to hardware and DEMAND DX9 in hw support. So I'm for OGL.
