Check out the photo of the Pitcairn on the NASA site:

Thanks for the picture.

When I was in the Naval Air, we used to taxi past the old Pitcairn factory which was just off the taxiway at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station in PA. It's been taken over by a machine shop now, but you can still see the faded sign (on the runway side of the building) that said Pitcairn Autogyro

If I remember my history correctly, I think that Amelia Earhart also flew one though I don't know when or for how long.

Thanks,

Bob

Word is that Steve Pitcairn has just retired Miss Champion. It will be on display at the EAA Museum.

Bob,

That machine shop refurbished the building and repainted the sign. I'm sad to write that you can no longer read the faded "Pitcairn" wording. I , too, noticed it as I drove along 611 to the base.

I always wondered if anyone in that building realized the significance of it's history.

Tom,
Thanks for the update. I'm kind of saddened to see that sign go. It would have been nice if the guy could have 'saved' that sign, faded as it was, just for the nostalgia of it.

At least I'll know enough not to look for it if I ever get back that way....

Thanks for the info, Tom.
