Wow I made the high-light reel :) and YES I DO want an F-22 However I am very disapointed in the delays for this particular jet..... My post shows a release date of Nov 25th. It's going to work out to something like 6 months since the initial release date, by the time this hits the plans stage. :( :sigh: Yet, All good things are worth waiting for

Can you help please? New to this electric build lark. I have nearly finished my F-18 from the plans (very impressed with depron as a matterial). I have a 10.8v 1000 mh Ni-mh 9 cell battery (from my Park zone Mustang-If this battery is OK I can get another and then have 2 batts I can use on either plane). Can I use this? and if so what is the best, most economical brushed motor/gear box /prop combo? This might sound stupid but I assume one has to ensure the prop is a pusher type? If this battery is not suitable please recommend one, and motor etc combo (not Li-Po)
Thanks.
P S my build wieght without radio, electrics etc should be pretty close to original as I have copied plans to the letter.
PPS I dont really want a 'screamer' rather something that flies much like the video. ;)

help?? did you even read the previous posts in this thread!~ There are direct links to anything you should need to know about this plane. This person took the time to put it all together so you wouldnt have to ask. I bet it took a few hours to ramble through the threads to get all this together.. sheesh..

need a gold rope for your hanging day too?

Sorry I have read and re-read every thing on this and other sites R.E. this design of pusher jets, and whilst I can find out the motor/g/box from the excellent thread listing, I can't find out if that specific battery I have is suitable? There are so many possible options it seems so I'm concerned of buying the wrong kit and hoped some kind, more experienced soul could reassure me, that is all I asked? Perhaps I'm just too dumb ?? But I would still appreciate some guidance here rather than put downs, as that is no help-I repeat I am new to this so please make some allowances? ;) If I re-phrase the question-would GWS EPS-350 with “C” gearing give adequate flight performance on a 10.8v 1000mh NiMh battery? I can't go Li-Po so need an equivalent set up.

My original F/A-18 and F-15's both flew well with 9.6V KAN 1050's (8 cells) and GWS 350C with C gearing but these planes fly much better brushless with lipos. If you have to stay with heavy nickel cells, at least invest in one of the cheap brushless setups to avoid burning out the GWS can motors....in the long run, the brushless setup will save you money.

Thank you-That told me what I wanted to know-At least I can use my battery to check it flies before investing more, many thanks.

A really dumb question some will think, but do I need a 'pusher' prop? surely merely turning a normal prop round the 'wrong' way would be inefficient? I can find talk of propo sizes etc, but it is not clear if a 'pusher' type is required?

No, you can use a standard prop. Just wire the motor to turn it the right way. Unlike gas engines, electric motors can turn either direction equally well.

I tried a mega in my F-5.. and after balancing.. it flew like a box.. just terrible performance.

I really suggest brushless .. the cost these days is not that much difference. Just sell your brushed stuff and make the switch, you will be so happy you did. Pusher jets will track better and flight times are longer..

Just an all around more satisfactory experience..

You could use a clear packing tape for that. several brands in the stores. Reaslly depends in what your landing into.

Was wandering what jetset 44 was talking about covering the leading edges with blue velvet tape on the F-18.

PhantomFlight

I didn't see where he mentioned blue velvet tape, but what he usually recommends is the 3M satin gift tape (the purple label) for covering the spars and for leading edges.

so i built the 77% scaled down version and flown it twice. ( its all messed up now as its the first plane i've flown 100% on my own) i just wanted to jump in and ask if anybody knows why when i try to do a loop that it just stalls and then rolls like crazy (from motor torque i think). maybe my elevator travel too much or just not enough power? seems like it takes about 75% throttle to fly well.

2200kv with 6x4. 11.1 1500mah 25c lipo and 30a ESC.

any clues?

very nice build technique btw goes together nice and easy

It should be a rocket with that setup. What kind of motor? Also make sure the prop is mounted correctly, if its reversed it will make some thrust, but not enough to fly properly. It to am building the 77% version, and trying to keep the weight low (25g motor, micro rx, 20amp esc).

i'll flip the prop over and try it i didn't realize that would make a difference (i'll admit to this being my first build and fly solo project) its just a cheap rctimer motor i got from ebay but it seems to run really smooth

also i'll add that level flight i'd guess it will push almost 40mph. but the damn thing just stalls like crazy if i get a very high angle of attack 40% or higher i'd say.

and has any one ever added ventilation to the battery compartment(s) just under the cockpit and how did they do it effectively with out too much structural degradation?

*** EDIT

so i just read and checked the prop and if the numbers are supposed to face forward than yes it was on backwards. so i'll try that asap.

thanks so much for pointing that out i never would have realized :D

*** EDIT AGAIN

i took it out today and it was amazing way faster, easier hand launch, did loops easily and had unlimited vertical climb.

and as a side note the motor esc and battery didn't get anything near as hot.
