So i'm looking to get a Hobbico Avistar RTF kit and I'd need someone to show me the ropes. I have quite a bit of time in FMS using my dual stick gamepad and am intimately familiar with all the control surfaces.
I'm in West LA and the closest field is the Sepulveda basin. Frosty cold ones provided by me (after flying of course). :D

Since it seems like no one from the West LA area has answered back to you, I would ask your local Hobby shop for help. If there is no designated AMA flying fields near you, there might be a place where a few pilots get together to fly. Before flying with a local club that started here, guys used to get together at a local sod farm and fly. If the hobby store can’t help, maybe they will let you post something on a bulletin board. Someone who knows of a spot or has private land might get back to you.
Who knows, others with the same problem in your area might come together to form a new club!!
Good Luck

Bill, I would not recommend you use a gamepad for training on any simulator unless it has proportional sticks - develops REALLY BAD habits. I'm having problems teaching my son fly - he would give full throw on a control surface and then release the stick - he plays a lot of TV and computer games. On his PS2 he prefers the buttons instead of the gimbals (sticks) - it's his way of playing games which I'm fighting right now.
Get a real radio for your FMS!

I'm actually using one of these. I set it up so the dual sticks act just like an rc controller. I don't even bother with the buttons. And yes, the sticks are proportional.
