Electric Car really stumbles at take off.....

Friend has a electric stampede with a Reedy 10T and a Novak super
rooster ESC. Upon take off car stumbles and stalls, but after that it
really scoots. We have checked the wires, etc. Everything looks good.
Battery isn't the greatest- Epic 3000mah nimh.

I told him that motor is too much for the truck. Is the problem
possibly not enough current? Maybe a 8cell battery is needed? Thanks

Overgeared, or the capacitors are not on there right.

Or ESC has an overload-Protect-circuit which kicks in at start-Torque...

Not sure. The super rooster is a pretty heavy duty esc with no motor
limit and can run two motors.

I'd say it's not getting enough juice.
Try another higher dump battery pack.

Shot winding on the motor? If so you should find that the truck sometimes
won't start unless you give it a push and the motor will also have a
reduction in overall performance.
I wouldn't try another battery, put a 27 turn or 19 turn stock in first
whatever you have to hand just to verify their is no radio interference
between the speedo/motor and rx combination.
I once had a strange thing happen with an LRP speedo that stuttered until I
put BOTH extra capacitors AND a schottky diode across the motor.

Sounds to me like the brushes are sticking. Clean the com and change the
brushes.
I would also suggest heavily if he is using standard Tamiya (molex) style
plugs to go to Deans Ultra Plugs.
I have a Super Rooster with a 10T in an Evader with stock gearing and never
had a problem.
I also use Epic 3000s.

Thanks. The motor is new. Only had two 5 minute runs on it. I will tell
him about the deans plugs.

Oh yeah a good point about switching to the Deans plugs, I forgot that. I
guess for that matter switching to good quality wire itself would be a good
thing too - Deans 12 gauge or Trinity 14 gauge is good.

One point about the Deans is that after experience I would not be tempted to
save a few bucks by using the Venom brand Deans clones. Electrically I think
they are fine, and they are totally compatible with Deans, but on the
downside they are hard to solder because the plastic seems really soft, and
if you leave the iron on for a *fraction* too long the plastic just melts.
This can happen with the Deans too of course but they seem a bit more
forgiving.

If you decide to swap to Deans I think it helps to plug the M and F together
(but with a decent gap between the plastic parts, definitely not touching so
they don't melt together) with a couple of alligator clips attached to the
"vacant" ends to act as heat sinks to help prevent the plastic melting.
Once you've done a few and your soldering is good (maybe it is already) you
don't need to worry about this.

An electric motor can't stall > are you outa of your mind <g> -- motors
(possibly bushings) bearings are dirty or corroded -- replace them and while
your at it cut the commutator and replace the brushes!

Swapped the spur from a 87 to 91 and pinion from 15 to 13. No more
stumble. I guess it was just too much current trying to be sucked by
the motor.
