What would be a good remote to get for a beginner, I have a superstar trainer that came with a 4ch remote and I also use it for a Tiger 2, I am still very new and would like to know what would be the advantage to get a 7ch or 9ch or even 14ch remote, what is the best brand for the money?

I have a pretty simple 6 chanel computer radio.. With a 6 chan, you can move up to planes with retractable gear, and / or flaps.

Being a computer radio, you can "tweak" how it sends your stick inputs, Make them more, or less sensitive at the flip of a switch. You can also "mix" with a coumputer radio.. This comes in handy if your going to fly a plane with a V tail, or flaperons, as well as other benefits.

A good 6 chan radio will probably cover 90% of the planes youll ever want to fly in the next few years..

That said, The Radio *I* have is a Futaba 6EXA. Its a very nice, basic 6 chan. computer radio.. It will store the settings for up to 6 different models.

A futaba flight pack (RX, Servos, Battery, Switch, etc..) runs about $120. This radio with the exact same flight pack included runs about $180..

So, if bought in a kit, the 6EXA is only a ~$60 radio.

As far as brands go, its like Ford Vs Chevy Vs Dodge. Ultimately, youre just looking for the radio that has the fweatures you want, and a price your comfortable with. The "Big 4" radio names (Futaba, Hitec, JR, Airtronics) will all be good choices.. It just comes down to your preference.

Oh, and not to confuse the issue too much, but there are 2 clases of radios. Positive shift, and Negative shift. Functionally, and rangewise, theres no difference, but You can not control a negative shift RX, with positive shift radio, and vice versa.
Futaba and Hitec are negative shif (As Id suspect your current RX and radio are) JR and Airtronics are positive shift.

Hope this helps.. Just a bit of a radio primer for ya :)

There are transmitters (the term we use for remote, sometimes we also use the term radio) that are switchable between positive and negative switch - Hitec Prism and Eclipse for example.

I like the JR brand remotes. they have a great feel to them and the trainer cord is a lot lighter. I've used Futaba also. great radio, but didn't feel as nice or balanced when holding. Go to a local hobby store if you can and check the feel for yourself.

Radios like the JR 8103 offer more in the way of features like:8 channels, memory for 10 different models or 10 different setups. They have expo, sub-trims, channel mixing ect.

True, I think most brands (Including Futaba) offer this in their higher-end models.

I just felt that was outside the scope of "Beginners chat"

If I was going to start over with a new radio I would SERIOUSLY look at the Hitec Optic 6!
