View Full Version : Reducing Charge Current On Fixed Rate Charger

Does anyone suppose it would be possible to convert a fixed rate charger over to an adjustable one? I was thinking that a variable resistor used in parallel in conjunction with a whattmeter could regulate the amps that a pack charges at.
I have an Astro 111xl that charges 6-cell packs at 5.4A, which is sort of high and I would like to reduce the charge rate somewhat.
Would it be possible to use a ceramic resistor of some sort to reduce the amps to the battery? I wonder if this would affect the peak detection of the charger. I dont' think it would, but I usually just know enough to get myself in trouble.
Thanks.

The AstroFlight web site (http://www.astroflight.com) shows a 110 and a 112 charger but no 111. Is it discontinued? At any rate, if it's a peak charger then, as you suggested, you can't alter its operation without interfering with peak detection.

Yes, it's an older model. Fixed charge rate. I could send it back to Astroflight, but it's probably not worth what it would take to fix it. The instructions say it should charge at 4.5A, but I'm getting a good bit more than that.
