View Full Version : Reflex XTR demo, Framerate?

I downloaded the demo version of XTR. Can I somewhere see the framerate value?
The framerate that I get while replaying the demo flights, is this the framerate I will get during normal simulation?

In the menu go to Simulation/Simulation Parameters/General and check the Data Display box, it will show framerate, speed, altitude ect. on the bottom of the screen.

Mine runs the same speed whether in demo mode or flying. Turning V-sync OFF improves the speed considerably.

You only see it when running in a window, i.e. NOT full screen.
Max.

I have found it, thanks :)

In the indoor demo with the shockflyer I get around 30 FPS in full-size window with V-Sync, 45 without V-Sync. The outdoor demos vary between 30 and 20 FPS with V-Sync.

Is this enough? It looks smooth to me....
This means that the real game will perform well on my system?

Thanks,
Frederic

That is not enough in my opinion. At least 60 fps is required for it to feel realistic. People with slow systems have complained about varying roll rates, and I have tried flying at 300-40 fps and the aircraft feel wrong, they change characteristic.

I get a constant 190+ fps in windowed mode with v-sync off on the indoor scenery with the demo, but I normally fly with v-sync on. V-sync synchronizes the framerate with the refreshrate of the monitor to avoid tiny jumps and tears in the picture. That's why the framerate will not go higher than 60 fps if you are running the monitor at 60 Hz for example.

I agree with Lynxman about the 60 fps being a good minimum framerate. Anything less and the flickering will cause most people to get a headache after flying for a while.

Might be time for a new video card?

The PC is a laptop which is not geared towards games. The video card is an “ATI Mobility 9600 Pro Turbo”

I have been running my tests a maximum resolution: 1920 x 1200.
When I lower the resolution I get better results (without v-sync so that rating are not be “clipped”)

1600 x 1200 50 -> 60 fps
1280 x 1024 80 -> 120 fps
1280 x 800 120 -> 160 fps

So the 1280 x 1024 could be a usable compromise?
What are the resolutions you guys are using?

Does somebody know how the framerate in maximized window compares to the framerate on full-screen?

Thanks,
Frederic

That video card is good!

Are you using the monitor on the laptop or a separate monitor. A laptop has a LCD monitor with a fixed resolution (native resolution) so there's no point in running a higher resolution than the monitor has. Do you know what the native resolution of your monitor is?

In my case the framerate in full screen vs window seems the same.

Oh yeah, no new video card needed. Well if you can get 60 fps at 60 hz that will be fine. Anything 60 or over will give a nice flicker free image. Sorry didn't realize the 30 fps was at max res.

As far as I can tell there is no difference in the framerate between windowed or fullscreen. I'm getting about 126 fps in the window at 1600x1200.

No need to apologize, I did not realise that I had to mention it and that it could be a source of bad performance. In fact I did not realize that 30 fps was bad...

The 1920 x 1200 resolution is the (native) resolution of the LCD. When I switch to another resolution the screen is sometimes blurry or only partly used. To use a lower resolution I can always attach the CRT monitor of my old PC.

Thanks for the help !
