I was thinking of using an LM317(L) connected as current source to keep the current trough a few leds constant. However, I will at least have a voltage drop of 1.2 V. Are there other, easily variable, regulators that I could use and that have a lower minimal voltage drop?
Thanks,
Fred

There are Low drop out (LDO) adjustable regulators that you can also wire as a current source.

Problem is that I do not know which of those devices are popular and could be available in a local electronics shop...

LM1084 is the same size as a LM317 and is an LDO regulator. It will also handle up to 5 amps as opposed to the 1.5 amps of the 317.
