my appolagies if this has been discussed before,I am new to boats and on a budget I have recently finished a model given to me by a friend who got board with the hobbie. It is a fairey huntsman i would like to fit a nitro engine but cannot afford a marine type, I have to hand a used os plane engine (my other hobbie)would this work what mods would I need to do to make this a success?

yes it would work providing u get a clutch etc for connecting it to the propeller.
However. what voltage will u be using. cos the problem you will have is keeping it cool without water cooling or the propeller cooling like on the aircraft. so the best thing to do would be to install a small fan or something running off a belt from the driveshaft. this will help to circulate air in there to keep the engine cool. Ideally if u can, you want to try and get someform of watercooling onto it. ya can get if ya look hard enough a water cooling jacket to go around the engine heatsink.

you dont really need a clutch, you can use either a collet of universal joint. i guess os makes universal joints for boats, see towerhobbies. cooling will be a problem, specially if its closed hatch. maybe you can wrap brass tube tightly into the head of the motor and attached cooling tube into it.

Fortunately OS make marine versions of most of their motors, so spare parts should be available. You'll definately need a flywheel, which will incorporate the female part of the U joint. If your budget also runs to the water-cooled head, that would be the ideal cooling option. However, aluminium or brass tube can be coiled around the cylinder liner. Running a fan off you engine shaft is possible, though you would need to ensure an ample supply of outside air, otherwise all it'll do is recirculate ever hotter air inside the cabin.
