I’m not sure if this is the correct group to start this thread but they are “simulating” the real thing
There are several QuickTime movies of the RC models used for the film here (http://www.aviatorvfx.com/index.php?cmd=frontendScreeningRoom) :)

Wow, that's really cool. I just figured it was all digital FX. I wonder if the pilot got the jitters taking up the Hercules for the first time. The scale looks of the XF-11 were awesome.

Thats amazing I couldn't tell the difference between the artificial pilot and Leonardo....both look wooden :D
The sfx are very effective - which shows that the old fashoined way can be just as good (if not better) than pure CGI. There is one scene though....where the Hercules is just surfing over the water....I thought the background & water was real and the plane CGI but it was entirely the other way round - the plane a large scale model and water & background all CGI.

I really enjoyed seeing the 'behind the scenes' stuff. Great link! It's awesome to see RC used in moviemaking.

At least the models had a full canopy for the H-1. Thought it pretty silly showing Hughes sitting in an open cockpit plane for setting a speed record at over 300mph, then they switch to a down view of model clearly showing a full canopy. Then again, it is just a movie.
