I used to fly glow... quit that long ago... been flying electric, recently got into slope... now I want something for thermal stuff. I see the main 2M stuff out there, the * ladies, spirits, etc.... what other 2M's are out there, even in kit form, that are good planes? I guess RES is good, I don't want to float forever..

Thanks
Paul

I would think that if you were proficient at power flying with airplanes that had ailerons and maybe retracts or scale modeling that you would find an RES pretty tame pretty quickly. I had lots of AMA pattern flying experience and jumped in to sailplanes with a full house openclass model.. It was called the Owl and was basically a wood version of todays F3J molded sailplanes albiet much weaker!
So I would recommend looking at some of the wood winged full house 2 meter models like the Omega or the Enigma from NES.. http://www.nesail.com/detail.php?productID=1184
A computer radio however is pretty much required to get the most enjoyment out of these types of sailplanes

Also look at Art Hobbies and their aileron stuff. Or if you just want to stick with RES then they have those as well but in a form that can penetrate a lot better than the typical built up Lady or Spectra. With your slope experience you shouldn't have any problems adapting.

Go to arthobby.com

Arndre had endless choices.

Typical model.... Thermik 2.5

Thanks for the input. I figured RES because I thought they'd be lighter, having less equipment in them. All of the above planes look good though.

Just my opinion, but an RES sailplane is probably about the easiest thing there is to fly. It is also about the hardest thing to fly WELL. Consistency in landing and timing are a real bear. Again, just my opinion, and I do fly both. One other thing... again just my opinion... skip the 2-meter and go on to the open-class gliders. You'll be much happeir with some wingspan...

welcome to the dark side, Paul. I love RES ships. Keeps the pulse rate manageable. As soon as I get off my duff, I'll be rolling out my Aquila build pics.

Go Tim, I'm looking forward for the Aquila pics, so far is as close I can get to an Aquila.
I'm looking forward to start on mines (AG and AXL) but my girlfriend does not allow me to even open the plans until I finish a couple of projects in the house. (all this reading about flying and not building is driving me crazy). I managed to sneak the templates the other day and cut the set of ribs.

Hang in there Fernando. I've been drooling over the Aquila XL stuff. Maybe soon!

Tim:

Get started on that thing and post some build pics here. We need some pictures to encourage us to move on with our projects.

BTW, I never did put those sissy little flower patterns on my BoT.

excellent news, EJ!

I've got the thing completely framed out, and I'll post the build soon. Right now, I'm stuck on putting servos in the wings for the spoilers. I know the solution, but I just don't have the time.

Don't think I've seen that one...

Though the Allegro-Lite has grabbed my attention....

Arbo:

We have hijacked your thread. :o Sorry. The Aquila is an RES and nostalgia legal design produced as a kit by Airtronics in late 1970's and early 1980's. They fly well, but wing structure is not strong enough to be competitive with the newer RES planes. Production of kits continued until the end of 2004 when Dream Catcher Hobby closed and ended availability.

I have 3 Aquilas now and an Aquila Grande short kit in the building que.

The BoT or Bird of Time has seen some recent building activity here as well.

The Allegro Lite is certainly a well designed plane and a rewarding, if challenging, build. The Allegro or it's bigger sibling the Bubble Dancer are state of the art in built up construction and are very capable sailplanes.

Don't worry about hijacking.... It's all good stuff to learn.

I'm in a toss up in terms of what to get... I'm thinking of 3 possiblites now (ok, more than three):

1) Allegro-Lite or up to Bubble Dancer...
2) Crystalis 2M
3) Scepter 100"

I'm sorry guys, can anyone explain to me what RES stand for?
Thanks.

Rudder, Elevator and Spoiler.

It's the type of control. Rudder, Elevator, Spoiler. The spoiler being one or two pieces on the top of the wing that flip up when activated, pretty much removing lift from the wing to help the plane that doesn't want to come down, come down.

ferincr,

RES stands for rudder, elevator and Spoiler.
I am also looking for my first thermal plane. GL with spoiler mod and Oly-II are in my list. Arthobby one is cool but I have bounch of standard servos on hand.. ;)

Really Expensive Sailplane....

well, not really, but I amused myself, and that is all that counts, isn't it?

Repeat after me, "It's not a lawn dart, it's not a lawn dart..."

I have an old "Californian" (Or Kalifornian for Arbo ;) ) kit that I'm framing up slowly for RES. 114" span with a nifty plastic molded fuse. A poly RES is the picture that still pops into my skull when I think RC sailplane, even after 30 years.

Me too. I have been back into modelling for about 4 1/2 years. All I ever did was R/C Sailplanes after I graduated from Nordics. I have had the fast, full-house stuff and it's nice  , but just doesn'r satisfy me like a really good RES glider.

I'm starting a Grand Esprit tonight :) , and another Houston Hawk is just about done :D .

I think that's part of the reason so many of the Bubble dancer and Photon type sailplanes are being flown. Awesome performance, and you can see the sun through the ribs.

Arbo, I'm interested in your views about the Chrysalis 2m. I have been admiring it on the DJ Areotech website for a while and am considering it as a building project to replace a dearly departed 2 meter ARF. It would be great to get your (or anyone else's view's) about it.

Cheers
