The best contact for gas and nitro would be the hydro guys.
My current contact would be Dave Reiser, davereiser3 AT msn.com.
If that address doesn't work, e-mail me, and I can forward your address.
They can also be contacted through NAMBA District 8
http://www.namba8.com
There is a current push to promote more gas and nitro running through the
Molalla RC Association. http://www.molrca.com/index.htm
http://www.molrca.com/upcoming/upcoming.htm
The other local Clubs In the Portland Area include
Portland Power Model Boat Club (Scale electrics)
Portland Model Yacht Club (Scale Sailboats)
Queen's Own Scale Model Warship Combat club,
and some
"Independent" Model boaters.

I am also in Portland and working on a nitro boat. I've heard some talk of there being some strict laws and/or fines in the area. Does anyone know what laws I should be aware of? And what would be a good, safe and legal pond to run on?

All the public parks in Portland do not allow internal combustion engines on the ponds.
(they do however allow leaf blowers)
There is a $500 fine if you are cited for running such a boat in one of the parks.
Places that I have heard people running gas boats are,
The cemetary pond off of Tualatin Valley Hwy between S.E. 32nd and 44th, Hillsboro.
I would check with the Cemetary office though.
The old gravel pond behind the Oregon City Center, and Clackamette Park off S.E. McLoughlin.
Force Lake, Behind the Expo Center along N. Force Ave. I heard that you need to drive through the Expo Center parking lot to get back there now, instead of turning off Marine drive to Force Ave.
I also spoke with Portland General Electric. There is no problem with launching boats on the square reflection pond at the Trojan Power plant in Raineer. You kind of have to watch out for fishermen, but most of them are on the landscaped pond to the South, right hand side, of the access road.
It seems like the best source for info has always been Hobbies Unlimited at 4503 N. Interstate Ave. 503 287-4090.
Our combat club picked up a membership with the Molalla RC Association.
This allows that member to "host" an event at the club's location. We hope that Molalla will develop into a proper site for our events as well as the events for gas and nitro racers.

There is a sign on the ?North? bank of the reflection pond, that says something like,...
"Windsurfers and RC Boats must remain on West side of pond."
The sign is below the power lines on the bank in the tall grass.
Try contacting Tony Dentel at PGE. (503) 464-7009 E-mail: tony_dental AT pgn.com
He was more than willing to help us set up an event at Trojan.
Current issues may be that they have leased the reflection pond to build a facility like
http://www.portrevel.com/
I do not know the current status of the proposal, but I contacted the lessor, and made a proposal to build the tug boats for them. He apparently also was in contact with Burchett Marine models to build the 1/25th scale tankers and freighters.
The pond was supposed to be drained and sculpted this year.
Let me know if you see anything happening at Trojan.
And Contact Tony, as he manages all of the PGE facilities.
As Far as gas and nitro clubs, the best contacts would be though NAMBA.
I had a contact in St Helens, and Springfield, Oregon, but I don't see the flyer.
I will let you know if it turns up.
