Hello RC Groups members,
Im looking for input on building and flight experience with two sailplanes that were designed by T. Edmonds and published in Model Aviation.
The Callisto 82 is a 100" t-tail and the Io was a 2meter version of the Callisto. I never saw anyone locally build one in the Denver, CO area and I never saw any in photos of Sailplane contests so not sure if it was a solid design and but people wouldnt invest the time to scratch build them or if the design had some flaw?
Any input would be helpful thanks!
As I recall they are both named for moons of the planet Jupiter. (Dont know why that little tidbit stuck with me but I guess thats why its called trivia!)

I've been wanting to ask that question too. At least about the Callisto. I order the plans back then, but entered highschool and got distracted by... well, all things high school, and never built it. I wonder if I'll even be able to find those plans next time I visit my parents.

I have the Callisto plans and they are still available from the AMA as well.
Still looking for additional comments though!

I have flown with Terry quite a bit. He, Mike Fox and I won the Team trophy at the Nats in 98. Both planes fly very well, but Terry is also a great flyer. They are built strong and launch very high. I never saw one flutter or have any type of failure. Hope this helps.

Would love to see the pics Charlie!
I wondered if there are any changes that should/could/would be made to them now since we have better knowledge of carbon material uses etc. The obvious ones are to use mini/micro servos in the wings instead of the long runs of solid wire and belcranks.
Thanks in advance for any of your thoughts

The last I heard about terry was that he is active, but not as much as the 80-90's, but then again, I'm one of the older, flustered members of the sore sock, which had been taken over by utter arrogance and stupidity a few tears ago. Everytime I tried to get to an event in the last couple years, my car would put up a fuss- like sudden stoppage to a propellor. A new car- maybe this weekend??---
ANYWAY--
I fell behind Terry at a contest by a couple places, and knowing i was going head to head with a high placing individual at the NATs, i was quite content to lose to him by 23 points! The (IO) flew like a deeper penetrating, higher L/D of a 2 meter Sagitta- It just didn't seem to want to land!
Terry would "zoom" it off the top of the winch, not with a dive, but just standing on the pedal the last 100 feet to accelerate it to altitude, other than watching the '87 F3B team tryout finals, I would say Terry had a better method for launching without a super dunk winch!

Terry flew at one of the SOAR contests this summer, he still is an excellent flyer. I think that Brian might be looking for Charlie Britt tho. ;)

I was wondering about Charlie too. I last saw him at the 2005 Mid South in Atlanta. Have not heard or seen anything since. I hope all is well with him.

More trivia, the Europa (another of Jupitors moons) is a 120' sailplane by Terry. I am going to build my kit one of these days.
Terry is a great guy that I meet and was whomped on by at the NAT's a couple of times.
He also hooked me up with a guy that had (it's MINE now and no I will NOt sell it) a Super Esprit kit.

Looking at his profile, he hasn't logged into rc groups since April of last year.

flyonemilehi,
Terry's Callisto and Io are named after the moons of Jupiter as is Europa. The Callisto is a great flyer, its only weak point was the use of the "T" tail. The launches were strong and high, very easy to control and tracked well in thermals. The servos being in fuse, this took the weight out the wings and made easy reading of wing movement.
At one time Jerry Slates made a F/G fuse for both, but don't know who has the molds???? Built as per the plans yields a very light aircraft and is strong. If I were to build another, the added use of carbon may be warranted but the wing rod was only 1/4 if I recall correctly, so bent rods would be expected. The Io would launch like a "Bullet".
