Hi, I'm looking to buy a good high torque servo for non-competition fun
and noticed the Tower Hobbies web site lists two different types of
servo - one is J and the other is S/JR/Z. This might be a stupid
question but I want to make sure before I order - if I have a basic AM
Futaba radio, is it the J type of servo I need to order? I take it the
S/JR/Z servo types are for other radio makes?

You need the "J" servo. The only difference is the connector shape.
Even if you get the wrong kind, you can trim it into shape with a hobby
knife. Just remember the black lead is almost always near the outside
edge of the receiver.
