Well, having exhausted the 'shipping' charge I thought I'd charge my BladeRunner for the first time.

After an hour or two with an unchanging LED pattern of 3secs red to 1sec off (implying battery low) I disconnected and, unable to get airborne, confirmed that the charger is either not charging, or the heli is not being charged. Connector wiggling causes no change in situation.

I guess I'm stuck with returning it, but I thought I'd check I'm not doing anything stupid  first...

Are you sure the BR switch is in the off position?

At first I appeared to be experiencing the same thing. The charge time was taking much longer than I'd expected. I just flew the BR for the first time on it's factory charge until it was too weak to take off, made sure the copter was switched off before connecting the charge plug to the underbelly and the red LED was blinking in the manner that Andy described. I left it on charge a while longer, (almost 2 hours) and then it took off like crazy. The only other thing I didn't expect was the LED didn't shine solid indicating a recharge, as described in the manual. It just switched off altogether. Has anyone else noticed this too? BTW, my BR model is the black & orange model, with the semi-exposed wiring along the tail section.

The first versions of the manual have an error with respect to the charging indicator. If you look at the online manual: http://www.interactivetoy.com/texts/manuals/Bladerunner-manual.pdf you will se that the indications you get is correct. Also note that if the battery is discharged quite much and you charge it until the red LED goes off you will need to charge it for much more than 20 min. However, I do not think you should leave it on charging for more than 50-60 min.

I'm also having the same problem. I was able to charge my br once after depleating the factory charge. Now i have run my battery down to the cut off point and only get random blinks from the led on the controler while attempting to recharge. I've tried leaving it on charge for several hours and still get no charge in the br battery. This is one of the qvc units. The connector on the charge cord and on the chopper are both in good shapem no bent pins or such. Havnt probed around for voltage yet wanted to see if any one else had a similar prob and if there is some easy fix before i go tearing the body off and all Also my friend accidently activated the rotors while i was carrying it by the top rotor and the whole craft spun around in my hand a bunch of times before he shut it down. Could this have blown something in the circuit board out?

The blinking you get when you try to charge indicates that there is no connection to the battery. Normal reasons are: Helicopter not switched off, connector not fully in place, broken switch or cable. However, it is also the posibility that the internal fuse in the battery is blown. This could happen if you engage the rotors when they are blocked (as you describe), but normally you would need to leave it on full speed for quite some time to blow this fuse. If it was completely dead after your "crash" it can be the fuse, but if it was still running for some time after that - it is more likely the connector or the switch.

You do not need to post the same question in 3 threads. It is less confusing if you stick to one thread and repeat your question there instead.
