Hi everyone, I got a short kit of an Aquila XL from DC hobby.
I've been studying the plans b4 I jump at the building table (since I didn't glue to pieces of balsa for 20 years) the constructinon looks pretty straight forward (a lot simpler than the A. Grande in fact), but I noticed all the ribs in the center panels are split in two pieces (front of the spar, and behind it)
Doesn't this weakens the wing structure too much???
Would it be better to cut a new set of ribs and build it the old fashion way?
Or should I go ahead with the way it comes.
I must tell you I'm not thinking in using winch or compiting with these planes, actually I'll be happy if I re-learn how to fly them.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Fer.

No. The spar is the backbone of the wing. The structure you see is much stronger than the more traditional structure. I have not seen an Aquila XL plan, but it sounds similar to the construction method used on the Legend. On the the Legend, the spar is the first wing structure built and then the rest of the wing is built around it.

You should follow the plans and instructions. But go ahead and buy some wood and cut another set of ribs (and other parts too) so you will have them if you need to reconstruct the wing or build another plane.

Ed, What a surprise!
You came to my rescue one more time.
Thanks again and don't worry I'll give you a couple of days rest since I'll be out guiding a trip.
I already copied the profiles for the ribs don't want to make that mistake twice of not having them for repairs or to build a second set of wings

I have built and flown the Aquila XL from Dreamcatcher. Build it just like the plans say and you will have a great plane. Ed Jett is correct.

Thanks a lot.
I'm on the way to make the extra wood order I need.

Rob:

Do you still have this plane? Would you sell it?

Sorry, that one is gone. It's a shame that Roy is getting out of the business, he did a good job with this kit.

happy trails - Rob
