View Full Version : Burning up E-Maxx Spur Gear 3166

Hello, I hope someone can help me who is familiar with the E-Maxx set up.
This is tough to describe. I had to replace the spur gear 3166 (combines
the dual motor output before it enters the transmission) on my E-maxx
because it burned up. Essentially after it breaks, the inner part of the
gear is free spinning becasue it has separated right in the middle all
around the gear at the point the bushing run around the gear. I understand
this can happen as the truck is run more and more. My problem is that
everytime I put a new one in with new bushings, it burns about the same way
again after about 30 minutes of running. I've tried it loose and also
tight and doesn't seem to matter. I can get it all back together but I
figure I'm either touquing the nut which holds the gear on too much or not
enough. Has anyone had this problem or know how to replace this gear
properly. Any help would be appreciated. If it would help I can post a
picture or two.

Thanks,

Greg

Greg sounds like your slipper clutch pads are gone. That way you could tighten it forever and it will still slip. One of the experts I checked recommends on a new E Maxx to tighten the spring tight and forget the 1/4 turn back off as the gears will handle the jump stresses real well without the slipper. That's the way Ive been running mine!

Had the exact same problem with mine.
Turned out to be several bearings were worn out.
difficult to detect cause,

I disassembled the entire truck. found 3 axle bearings that were (corroded)
worn-out.
I replaced the bearings and viola --- no more issues

Sounds like the slipper is too loose, and has melted out the middle of
the spur gear.

Per the manual, crank it down 100% tight (ie, can't get it any
tighter) then back it off 1/4 turn.

Per accepted wisdom (including my personal experience) torque the slipper
right up and forget about it. The Maxx shafts and trannies in general are
well engineered and can cope with it - I've done this on both E and T Maxxes
and they have been fine.

Be careful when you torque it up, grasshopper, that the spring doesn't
distort and slide around the side of the nut - this way lies slippage, burnt
pegs, tears - evil demons!!!!

Before that, however, I would certainly perform the other maintenance tasks
some others have mentioned, in particular replacing the slipper pegs.

I had the same thing happen. I was told to get a new peg kit and fill
all the holes, not every other one. Then tighten the slipper all the
way. That was 6 months ago and am still running strong.
