Hi... Su-47 Berkut

By its desing the plane owes much to Steve "Jetset44"´s designs icluding F18, F-15 etc.
Big thanks to Steve for the inspiration!

Building materials needed for the plane:
- 6 and 3 mm depron sheets
- 3 mm diameter carbon fibre
- 5 mm diameter carbon fibre tube
- 0.8mm strenght PCB material (used for motor mount, the material is the same your computer motherboard is)

Recommended setup:
- Axi 2212/20 or similar
- largest recommended prop :7"
- 3 mini-servos, ie. HS-55
- at least 4-CH receiver
- LiPo batterys , 80-120g

Measurements:
- Wing span 78cm (30.7 inch).
- Length: 103cm (40.55 in).
- Weight: 340g (12 oz) as shown unpainted.

The control system include 3 servos from which 2 operates the flaperons and one operates elevator and canard
wing in the front, at the same time.(connected with a pushrod)
Flapero movement range +-15 degrees.
Flaperons have been widened 5mm compared to initial model to achieve better roll rate.
Elevator control range +-15 degrees and Canard +-10 degrees.
40% expo used with all control surfaces.

I am not using Flaperons as flaps at the moment , only as ailerons, but no restrictions for flap usage either.
Later on , when the experience has been earned , you may try using higher movement range.

About designing abd building:
In the plans the motor mount is drawn as 10x10mm wooden stick like in GWS models, but every builder can make their own adjustments/designs as they wish.
The motor installation angle should be 4-5 degrees downwards. ALSO there is an option to make moving motor mount connected with elevator so that way you could
achieve "thrust vectorin" for a parkjet. Resulting manouvering capability should be quite exciting. Even now we can make Cobra turns!!
With full control surface deflections manouvering is even without "thrust vectoring" very fast.
Torsional rod is 3mm CF rod installed inside of 5mm CF tube in elevators and canards.

The servo attachment pieces are not drawn, but anyone can desing them their own liking from either depron or balsa.

CG is marked on the picture 3view.gif (between canard and main wing assembly)

The largest reasonably usable propellor is 7" (APC 7x6) , which I used, and I had to even cut some room for that from insides of elevators.

Full construction plan (assembly picture, decals etc.) you can take my ftp.

AWESOME!!!
Man I've been dying for one of these to be made up! Gonna get building REAL soon!
Hopefully have my E-Flight 400 On a GWS C-Gear w/ 9x8 prop. It was MORE than enough power for my hornet, should be awesome on this Berkut!
Thanks Rane!

Rane,
I just downloaded your full construction zip file and looked through the plans and photos. EXCELLENT work! You've put a lot of thought and effort into the design of this bird and it shows. THANK YOU for sharing your work with us!

This is bird is definitely on my must-build list. After I finish up the projects I've already got going I'm going to build it!

By the way, do you (or anyone else) know where to get the 0.8 mm PCB material? Would electronics supply stores carry it?

I thought it was very ingenious how you used the PCB material to support the carbon rod for the aft elevators. Neat!

Steve, your local Radio Shack should have PCB's.

Akura, thats a sweeeeeeeeeeet scheme, but then again, I love the Soviet/Russian/Eastern Bloc paint schemes.
I hope someone does a Berkut with this scheme, that would look incredible.
I'd do one, but I'm waaaay backed up with planned builds from Steve's and Levi's parkjets. Maybe I'll get one of these made in '05. :D

Hi Steve.
You can use without worry something other slim, light and hard material (0.8-1mm) this PCB material in place of.
Absolute are do control system light locomotion.

;) When all else fails...break out the Dremel

But I think Radio Shack may have the scissors Rane is speaking of. Its been years since I worked with PCBs in Electonics class in High School, but I think I remember something about scissors.

Who is this "Tbolt" guy!? And why doesn't he build his own jets!? lol
Actually I'm getting ready to start the Berkut once I'm done w/ a buddies' F-15, I have some questions for the '47 master though...(AKA RANE).
1.) Did you go with Ailerons on the wings and elevator, or did you go w/ tailerons?
2.) If you did the Ail/Elev como, did you couple the elevator and canards?
And for all:
3.) Anybody else build this bird!? This is a really AWESOME desgin! post pics!

I've decided to scratch my "Mega" F-4 project and substitute the Airframe for the
Su-47 (w/ retracts and BL motor OF COURSE :D )
I'll see if I can get the digital camera to work right, but if not, I'll find a way to post pics! Should start construction pretty soon, heck, maybe even while I wait for the F-15 pieces to dry!!! :D

This is so beautiful! Someone needs to make a kit of this for those of us who would have trouble printing out the plans and getting the depron.

It's Offshore's "Su-37/47. Designed for twin 400/480 size fans. Not too difficult of a build, but I just haven't gotten around to cutting any of the peices out seeing as I only bought the plan; course, now that I've started on Rane's Berkut, guess I better finish it up first! :D

LittleJon
Feb 09, 2005, 10:40 PM
That's very nice indeed, but I'd prefer a pusher with vectored thrust. Anyhow, 88cm wingspan sounds too big to fit in my Miata (then again so does the 30 inch foam one)!

Hello All.

I am do SU-47 Berkut new EDF version.

New EDF Berkut weight 360g (12,7 oz) without accu, as shown unpainted.
I use one GWS 55 EDF and Hyperion X-22 Series kv. 3800 motor.
Accu was MaxAmp 3S1P 1650mAh

Maiden fly is today and this setup was light power.
Performance would come big better add second fan, berkut body fit even larger fan.

I am going to test still repair intake air tunnel if may he have performance better.

Here a few picture maiden fly.

Rane

Rane,

Very inspiring work mate! I've printed your plans off and are cutting the depron now!

If you are not happy with the EDF version, i think a simple modification would be to use the Alfa Generation 2 fan, which is 60mm.

We use it alot here and with the Himax 2025-5300 and 2000-2450mah lipo.

19A at WOT, 500g thrust at sea level. This is ALOT better than the GWS/Hyperion combo.

We tested the Hyperion 5000 on the Alfa Fan and got 45000 rpm which delivers around 400g thrust at 19A. On the other hand we are getting over 50000rpm on the himax at 19A. All tests measured on scales, repeated, and also with exit cones on as well as on and off inlet cones.

Be sure to make a wide radius intake for your fan also.

I estimate that your static thrust for the hyperion 3800 and gws would be between 300 and 330g at 12A. (have you checked this?)

So as you can see the himax/alfa setup would turn this single EDF into something quite good i think.

Even the microfan (50mm) with the himax would be better as that gives 400g at 19A as an alternative if diameter is a problem.

Me thinks i might have to go for EDF now!!!!...lol..

Baby!!!

Cheers,

Tim.

Hello,

I'm planning to build one, but I've some questions about the setup.
I would like to use items from my Ultimate (cheaper than buy more stuff :D ) :
- Axi 2212/34 motor
- CC phoenix 10amp ESC
- E-tec 1200mah LiPo battery
- APC 7x6 prop

Do you think it will fit ?
Should I change something ?

Thanks a lot
Regards :)

Hello Buku Gaidin

This setup -Axi 2212/34 motor and APC 7x6 prop feel for my non-effective.

Could you look performance e.g this site. http://www.flyingmodels.org/motortest/brushless/model_motors/axi_2212-34.htm

For example Axi 2212/26 or 2212/20 would be better motor.

Hummmm sweet :D
This bird is really beautiful !

Just a question, why do you land on the road rather than on soft grass ? :p

I really gotta find time to build mine!
I guess I'll choose the "Mobius" squad paint...

Thanks comment...

Ground why i land on the road is because SU-47 elevator front are long and it in summer land it grasp grass and turn broke.

Has anyone tried to reduce this? I think I will try for 60% and see how it works. I'll try and get some pictures when I start on it.

Rane, how did you make the prototype and what is it made of? I would like to make one too. If you can't describe it in english you can use Finnish and I will run it through Roughlate when I'm at work.

Hello maelstrom :)

At first i print 3view.gif http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=355901 paper and add picture pencil intersection.

Next i cut part imagery off paper and draw paper imagerys parts 3mm gray depron.

On next i glue together parts and finalize parts if was be in need of.

At last i do sanding elicit correct shape.

In this in a nutshell this Su-47 prototype story.

This Su-47 prototype also fly pretty well as set CG correct.

Prototype building materials is 3mm gray depron. (once more)

Wow- I am going to build one and put a 16/15/4 with a 6x4APC and 3S 2220 Tanics. My friend uses this in his Gripen and it is awesome. Hoping for about 21oz all up. I will build it in early September.
