Having flown R/C for many years, and also having flown full scale gliders, I can't quite understand why you would build a sailplane the size of the one in the first photo. Once you've gotten to this size you might as well go full scale. It is after all, much more fun when you are SITTING IN the pilot's seat.

Perhaps that first one is because a person is afraid of heights or lacks the medical clearance to climb in full scale...not every one wants to be airborne.
BUT I sure do!!!

And you know what the most amazing thing is ?
The guy who flies these beasts, has only one hand, lost one in an accident !

I read that on his website, but can't find the URL again, either...
By the time I rerad that, the 13m ASW22 had not flown yet, but he was flying his "small" 8.3m ASW whatever....

Actually to fly full size gliders there is no requirement for a medical. Medical certificates are only required in power and such.

Just sitting back and thinking for a moment it is strange to think there are full sized gliders with the same wingspan. Cool...

You're not too far from the Archaeopteryx.

http://www.zhwin.ch/archaeopteryx/english.php (Under 'Pictures', click 'Foot Launch')

Now why would you want the plane to have all the fun.

Hi guys, I'm the owner of the 13,2 m. As I saw some people wondering why flying such large planes, consider this.
In Belgium we need to have a medical certificate, and I can assure you it is not that easy with one hand. Ok then, just lets try to get as close as possible as the real ones  .
A second reason, the kick... when flying that beast just 2 m above your head :D . Happy soaring over there

@FlyingFlorry : Can you give a few more details about the ASW22 ?

Construction, how many segments in the wing, type&qty. of servos, etc.
Not that I am ever going to buy/build something this size, but am just curious..

Also, what's your all-up weight, and how do you guys launch it ?

@FlyingFlorry,
I love that plane! I'd love to have one, but my girlfriend would kill me! I wish you much luck and fun in flying your models and I hope you can find a way to fly full scale someday!

One wings is in 2 parts, a 4m inner section , and a 2.5 m outer section containing the ailerons. The servos used are Hitec 18kg for wheelbrake, rudder, and aerotow. 2x8kg for one aileron. 2x8kg for stab. and 8kg servos for airbrake. Actually , the model has been sold to an English man, because here in Belgium and France where I fly regulations are too severe ,and this is no fun. The plane weihts only 28kg, and is in fact to low for that size, this is why I add a lot of weight when flying. How we fly this....just launch from the slope !!! Yeah, thats it...it is a hand launch glider, but you need 6 hands :) . Oh, by the way, actually I'm flying real planes now (aerobatics) but with a friend of mine. I will try to put some video on the new site, but my Linux server (hardware...not Linux :D ) crashed. In RC I still fly the other planes,ASH25 8m, ASW22 7m. For the moment I also fly a lot the IL2 simulator in team (aerobatics formation training)...maybe we can fly together one of these days...my nick is l_skyhunter, who knows.(ubi.com and hyperlobby)

i love the idea of these big gliders and i do understand your reasoning but have you ever considered hanggliding? i dont believe there is a medical required for hanggliding?

p.s. please fly that thing as if it is full size! an accident is all that is needed with a glider that size to start the process and soon we will need a licence to fly r/c!
