Last time I had the truck out (2 weeks ago) it was fine ran great. yesterday
I took it out and it sounded funny. normal exhaust sound but in a real high
pitch. and it never hit second gear. I shut it right down after that run and
could not find anything visually wrong. any idea?
thanks

Things to check if T-Maxx not reaching second gear:
(a) Is the truck ALREADY in second gear? This sounds stupid, but a T-Maxx
will actually perform OK if it is stuck in second gear. Because you don't
hear an upchange you can think that its in first and not chaning into second
when the opposite is true. The shift point grub screw may require tightening
(in my case it had vibrated out completely).
(b) Slipper clutch - check that it is nipped up pretty tight. I ran my Maxx
with the slipper set to fully tight with no ill effects at all.
(c) If there is a whining noise, check the clutch bell/spur gear fit.
(d) Clutch not engaging fully. Remove and inspect.
Those are the only issues I could think of based on my T-Maxx ownership.
Doubtless there will be plenty of others who know more about it than me. You
should also try Traxxas, their support has a high (and in my experience
deserved) reputation.

Right. If top speed seems ok but the model accellerates slowly, I'd
say it's stuck in 2nd for the reason transam describes.

Yes, a slipping slipper will squeal, though it can be hard to hear on
a nitro model.

That's actually the lines along which I was thinking.

Or something dragging/binding elsewhere; rock stuck in a carrier,
stick stuck in the wheels, etc.

Thanks , it turned out to be the Slipper clutch. I replaced it and she ran
like a champ again.
