View Full Version : Carbon tube type for NSP planes?

The SlimGym I bought from NSP awhile ago has a CF tube for the fuselage (I imagine other NSP planes have similar tubes). I'm wondering what kind of tubes these are and where I can get some more. It is about 7mm in diameter with a very thin wall and is very stiff. It is also quite light.

I purchased a 5mm tube from homefly.com but it is a little flexible. I'm not sure if that's because it is 2mm smaller or if it is a different type of tube. I've check Hand-em-high and I think I want a wrapped and not pultruded one. Does anyone know what the specific type of this tube is?

Try these folks for carbon rods and tubes.

Ask Bonnie about the stiffness of their tubes.

I found this thread :)

I'm looking for light stiff, dia fuselage tube around 250 dia the dia is for rigidity and to make it easier to fasten stuff to.

It would be nice if it is affordable.

Now what do I ask for - pultruded? I have this place: http://www.airdyn.com/ Then there is also Hang em high

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi poobs. If you're looking for something light and strong, I would go with the wrapped tubes instead of the pultruded ones. Here is some info I posted in another thread. The prices are pretty good, but you'll probably want to order several items to make the shipping worth it. I bought a bunch of tubes and CF rods and my shipping was around $7.00 (they charge actual shipping costs).

-----

Here are the specs on some CF tubes I bought from Hang-Em-High. The weights are accurate to 0.1g. The outer diamters (OD) are all from the web page, as are the inner diameters (ID) of the Avia tubes. The inner diameter of the Prospar 16 was eyeballed with a ruler, and I no longer have the PC-15 tube.

grams ID / OD length
15.6g 0.298 / ??? 32.5" Prospar PC-15-298 $5.55
19.4g 0.309 / 0.250 32.5" Prospar PC-16-309 $5.85
6.4g 0.170 / 0.158 30" Avia G-Force Breeze II (non-tapered) $6.00
12.8g 0.245 / 0.240 32.5" Avia G-Force (non-tapered) $4.80

The Avia tubes are on the SkyShark page, not the G-Force page. The Breeze II is the SkyShark 2P replacement and the regular G-Force is the SkyShark 3P replacement.

Hmmm, tables don't work so well here...

tom:

I called Hang em high and they had no idea what I was talking about.

Avia has 5 feet of wrapped carbon .250 ID tube for $17.00 plus shipping. I think the lady said it weighed 7 grams /foot

How does that sound? :o

That sounds almost like Air Dyne's $9.00 for 30 inches

I'm gettinging missfed :(

Hi poobs. Below are the actual descriptions from the web page of what I ordered. The names in () are the names that I list in my table (the actual tube names). If you give them the part number below and the description they should know what it is. I would recommend the WIND-3P ($4.80), but either of the ProSpars would be good too. CF rods are cheap there, so you might want to pick up some of those too if you're interested (click on the "RODS" link and scroll down). If you need any more help let me know.

(Avia G-Force Breeze II)
Part SS2P-32 - SkyShark - 2P - Carbon - Replacement
Replacement for the 2P-32. Non-tapered. These are less expensive & an equal replacement. OD is .170 and ID is .158
Price: $6.00

(Avia G-Force)
Part WIND-3P - SkyShark - 3P - Carbon - Replacement
Replacement for the 3P-32. Non-tapered. These are less expensive and an equal replacement. OD is .245 and ID is .240
Price: $4.80
32.5" long

(Prospar PC-15-298)
Part PC*15 - Pro*Spar Carbon - PC15
32.5" long. BLACK (sanded). A very strong thin walled carbon tube. OD is .278.
Price: $5.55

(Prospar PC-16-309)
Part PC*16 - Pro*Spar Carbon - PC16
32.5" long. BLACK (sanded). A very strong thin walled carbon tube. OD is .309
Price: $5.85

Tom:

These are p/ns at Hang em High - right?

Thanks :) PC-16-309) sounds good or PC-15-298

I want the tubes for a fuselage on a MM Glider Tech Lil Hornet.
About 24 in. should do it.

I'm interested in the largest diameter that can be had without incurring too much weight.

I figure the wider rods are more rigid and offer easier time of gluing stuss on to them such as wing saddles etc.

Thanks again.

Yep, those are Hang-Em-High's part numbers. Good luck with your new fuse.

What's the diameter of that hole? Did you get some carbon fiber to fill it? :)

I ordered using the web page and everything went smoothly. Sounds like I should stick to that method.

Actually I did order...i think it was Prospar PC-15-298
Part WIND-3P - SkyShark - 3P - Carbon - Replacement .

I called twice and twice I got the same lady.

Basically you can't tell her what you want. She only deals in part numbers.

Stick with on- line ordering ;)
