Has anyone else out there built a small auto gyro like this?

Its got a 13 inch span ( rotar DIAMETER)... I need to put modern gear on it and see what it can do!

Blades are hand carved and are 5 1/8th inch from root to tip ( not including flexible coffee can lid Hub)

Used to fly witha GWS micro servo and 8 50 Mah Nicads on a Direct drive GWS mtor with a % inch red prop off a Cox Viper. Used a GWS rx as well. Bunches told me it would never fly!

Well after lookign at some of the Carbon fiber I had, I decided to "upgrade this little Gyro.

In the pic above it weighed 17.5 grams as it sat..

Here is the NEW version.. it weighs 15 grams... not a big weight savings, but it is much more sturdy now. ( plus it looks cool! )

I saw this little motor/gearbox/prop lying there begging for a home.... Its probably not powerful enough. But heck I think im gonna get a little cirrus miro gear set for it and put a 2 cell Lipo on it. Maybee it will fly.. if not Ill have to go back to a GWS direct drive or better yet a FIREFLY! ohhh that would be cool... any Brushless controllers out there lighter than th CC 10?

I need help!!! I built a autogyro last night! Thought i did every thing right but......when i went to try and launch it i notice that when i walked forward the blades did not spin. It's not a friction issue because the hub it mounted on a bearing and they spin freely by hand. Its a blade angle issue that i don't know how to solve..what am i doing wrong? I know when i walk forward those blades should start spinning counter clockwise. Help!!!

you need to give them a spin first... if you jsut walk forward, the blades will be stalled and will not autorotate. IF they are already spinning, the AOA is lower and the blades are not stalled. At that point autorotation will occur.

What are you blades angled at?

How many Blades?

what sort of airfoil?

AustinTatious,

An Astroflight Firefly motor (and it is a coreless motor, not brushless!!!) might not have the speed and/or power to fly your autogyro if used according to spec (i.e. 2-cell LiPoly pack and Gunther prop). You might have better success though using a 3-cell lipoly pack (250mah, or better yet, 145mah) and a GWS 5x3 or 4x4 prop. Just don't go over 1A current for extended periods.

My experience with this motor is that it prefers models that have reasonably good airfoils. It also seems to like pushers (e.g. Ligetti Stratos, BD-5, Pushy Galore). Autogyros, on the other hand, are power hogs!!!

Of course, you are free to prove me wrong (especially since I have 2 Firefly motors currently unused). ;)

You can also use a Feigao 12mm brushless motor. That should do just fine with a 3x2 prop. It should perform much better than the GWS EDP50 you used to have.

P.S. All this talk about autogyros makes me want to build another one. But, I already have a pipeline of things to build. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

For info on another indoor electric gyro go to 'pager powered autogyro' right here at RC Groups - Indoor & micro.

Good luck,
