Use a flexible control cable, or a push rod to come straight up underneath the hinged side of the trap door. As the cable, or pushrod extends, it will lift the door, and hold it open till the cable or rod is retracted.

I use it to open a mine hatch and hold it open till nine bobbers, 8 feet of string, and a second anchor weight are deployed. Very nasty things to get in your propellers during a battle. :D

Let me know if you need a diagram.

Here are some images of my deck lid, and a diagram of the cable.
Please excuse the "Shot up" nature of my destroyer's stern.
It is still suffering from the August Nationals.

If you have enough room, you could mount the servo under the deck and use a solid push rod straight up through the deck and box to open the lid.
The trick is to keep it push rod close to the hinge. ;)
