Howdy all-
Several people have been inquiring about a foam replacement wing for their Gentle Lady sailplane and I've never really made too many of them, but...
Theres been a lot of talk in my email account again lately about this subject.
One question I have and a favor to ask-
What does a RTF Gentle lady wing weigh? Does anyone have one and a scale nearby? Just need the weight of the wing from a couple of people. I just realized this weekend that I cant find my GL balsa wing anywhere. I have a fuselage though :)
Thanks for the help. I will try and find in my notebook what the foam wings I've built in the past ended up weighing.
Thanks again,
Dean

I have 2 GL built-ups.. one made 12 years ago, the other last year.
Somewhat different than kit, with shear webs..
Both weigh 10-1/2 oz. as flown.

Mine weighs just under 9oz. I just built it with no mods. Hope it helps!

Hey Dean/All,
I've decided to build up the GL foam wing. I have many sheets of blue foam left over from a construction project and I'll grab the weights at each step and give the lay-up schedule. Won't happen yesterday but will post as things progress.

Sounds groovey- I might be there with you too. I actually have a set cut froma while ago (different airfoil), just waiting around for the bench to get cleared :)
Keep us posted

Will do!
I hope to cut a brand new set of foam cores for the GL this next weekend, weighing everything and posting etc.
Should be fun. I have always loved the lines of the GL

Oh- also forgot to post- An old Foam wing I built for the GL, covered in 3mil packing tape with spruce spars and built rather heavy is noted in my book form a couple years back as 14 ounces. IT also says underneath the weights
"slopes great, wing flexes a bit while working the elevator hard"
And below that reads
"Does not like high start" :)
I remember I only sparred the center panels, and did not make a I beam, just a piece of spruce glued in each side with no LE or TE wood. I expect the new set I cut will have a LE for a wooden dowel and a spar, and a balsa TE

Dean,
The weight of the assembled wing on my GL ARF is 330 grams or about 11.6 oz. Again, this is with the stiffer and exoxy to hold the two haves together.
Hope this helps, Tony

Yardbird- that did help.
Seems like a foam wing will be about 33% heavier than a built up wing, but it might have it's benefits. Anyone else get anything done on their GL foam wing projects?

8.4 oz, carbon capped and kevlar wound :D
Funny this thread should pop back up. I've been kicking around the notion to cut another wing for my trusty ol' GL. Vac-bagged and full house, with maybe a 7036 or something similar...not too fast, but not too floaty.
