Flugzoid

Hello to the skilled hobbiest on this forum. I am new at scratch building, but I'd like to try and attempt building up a scratch kit. I am interested in any construction techniques associated with building a detailed warbird. I'd like to try and make a fiberglass OR plastic OR foam warbird fuselage with enough detail to show panel lines and rivets. Does anyone have any recommendations on good books or good resources to find out how to make such a model?
I think that I'm leaning in the direction of making a fiberglass model. I realize that I'll need to make a plug from which I'll make my molds from. Can this be made from foam? Will the panel lines and rivets show up up on this type of plug when I attempt to make the mold? What is the best recommendation for this? Can I make the plug from carved foam, cover it with bondo, then scribe in the panel lines and add the rivets? Will they show up on the mold? Will this look okay? What is the best recommendation of material for making the mold?
I desire an end product to be relatively light weight, excellent detail, and left with something (like molds) where I can make more than one if I crash the first couple. Is fiberglass the way to go with this? Or should I attempt something completely different...like vinyl or plastic? Foam maybe? I figure that I'll need to reinforce any skin structure with formers in any event.
Any ideas, suggestions, or advice would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks very much for helping out a newbie to the sport!
