The Author with his Lanzo Cabin

The group and contest is dedicated to the preservation and competition of Old Time
Model Airplanes both R/C and Freeflight. The models all have to be designs from before
1943, (yes they are even older than I am) these are for the old timer events and the
nostalgia events are pre 1955. There are general categories of rubber powered, electric
powered and gas powered with a myriad of classes divided up by power plant and size
restrictions.

The Champs lasts typically 1 week with about 10 classes of models flown each day. There
were over 200 contestants and I bet over the 5 days there were again over 1000 models.

The contest is run much differently than what we have with the sailplanes, in that you
have a task with rounds to fly for the day. You just go up to the scoring booth, ask for a
timer, get your pin and then go fly your round....Some contestants would get their rounds
done early in the day some would wait till the afternoon. It was the most relaxed contest
flying I've ever seen. You set your own schedule and do your own thing. Flying is from 8
to 4 and that's it. We were flying this year on a 1 mile square out landing field for the
US Navy...The place was like a mile square putting green. It was beautiful and quite easy
to get used to for flying. There was some paved runway surface for the ROG and a landing
area half the size of Kansas.......

The weather was generally pretty good but always windy in the morning and mostly breezy
in the afternoon......The weather report was for mostly fair with variable cloudiness for
the week.

The first day was the Spirit of SAM event, it was for Old Time rubber models with
electric power. The task was to fly for 15 minutes with unlimited motor run but the motor
battery had to weigh less than 4.1 oz. ( this was the kicker). We had 2 rounds to make 2
maxes. The event was won by Jay Burkart flying a Lanzo Cabin powered by a Speed 400 with
5.25 to 1 Simprop gearbox using a 13.5 x 8 prop, Eut Tileston came in second flying a
Stahl scale Fairchild using a speed 400 with Graupner 6 to 1 gearbox with a Sonic Tronic
12 x 7 prop. Folding prop was allowed

The Electric LMR Event

The second day was the Electric LMR (limited motor run), you now get a 90 second climb
then shut off the motor and complete a 10 minute total flight. The planes are the same as
Texaco being pre 1943 gas designs. You are allowed to use a seven cell 800mah battery pack
same as the Texaco event. The event was won by Jay Burkart flying a Pylon Playboy using a
MEGA Mini motor with Kruse 2 to 1 gearbox and Aeronaut 14 x 7 prop, Rick Richardson flew a
Cleveland Viking to second powered by a Asto FAI using the Astro gearbox and Master
Airscrew 11 x 7 electric wood prop. Props cannot fold.

designs, the task was longest flight of the day for two tries using unlimited motor run.
The restriction is a 7 cell 800mah motor battery pack. Props cannot fold. The event was
won by Jay Burkart flying a Lanzo Bomber using a Speed 400 with 5.25 to 1 Simprop gearbox
and a special 16 x 16 prop. Second was Jack Hiner flying a Lanzo Racer powered by a
Leisure 28T motor and Leisure gearbox turning a 16 x 15 prop.
