This newsletter is a personal project to help fellow avaition enthusiasts
find sources, ideas and hardware for micro scale R/C and free flight.
The guidelines are simple:
No plane over 1 meter or ~40" wingspan.
Maximum engine size .10 or equivalent electric or CO2. (Preferably <=.05) okay so a lazy bee fits in there, but so do most of my planes so far) a request for all: if you have anything to submit, whether it be a simple note saying that i should look in a particular magazine issue, a book you'd like to reccomend, a hint or tip, plans you have for sale, or a free flight to r/c conversion, send your info to the editor svandyk(at)mgl.ca shane vandyk) specifically, info on the following would be appreciated: hiline and knight pridham motors: power weight power on time, amps. a list of co2 motors available. sources for small model airplane plans and scale drawings. a small review of a kit you have built, good, bad, flyable, handles like a brick, flys like a dream, built easy... that kinda stuff. and a question for all: do you would feel the this newsletter would be better off on my web site with the ablility to display pictures of prototype work and have hypertext links instead of having to read one long document, or, keep it like it is in a form that can be easily be emailed to people and avoids the delay times involved with web zines?> if you </pre>
<pre>recievd this newsletter by Usenet or subscription, a simple reply
should get gack to me at this address.
This newsletter may be obtained by subscription by sending a reply to me at
the above address, by looking for it in Usenet rec.models.rc under the name
MicroRCNewsletter Issue #XXX or at my WWWeb site at www.mgl.ca/~svandyk.
Regularity (monthly, bi-monthly) will be determined by reader response, If
you find it at all interesting let me know!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Items I am planning to make available:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--Micro reciever units--
In the development stages now is a add on project for the SG Corp Blimp
Radio (see below) to allow controll of indoor R/C planes. It would be
a rudder, elevator system available with either NiCads or 1Watt superlight
coreless motors, gearboxes in planetary or spur gearing. I am looking into
other radio systems available, If anyone has info on tiny Free flight
remote dethermalizers or and micro R/C radios besides the Ceto, let me know.
A Shredder 1/2 oz reciever based system will be released depending on
consumer response as a kit or plans.
--Micro motors--
See info in the products section under MicroMo
--1300Mah 7.2V 7.5oz fully assembled w/o heavy 14Ga wire battery packs--
I may have a quantity of quality high discharge, vented cells available in
the very near future. Cost will be $20 Cdn to Canadian Customers and $20 US
to American Customers. Price includes shipping by mail. COD in Canada
accepted. Note that normal 1400Mah cells are over 11oz and these are only
7.5oz weight. Let me know if you are interested, they come with a peak
charging circuit board but do not have heavy wires or connectors on them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
New (and not so new) Products:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--SG. CORP's 27MHz Radio/Fan unit.--
-This has to be the greatest thing yet for micro scale R/C. The
system has a two stick transmitter and a reciever with two built-in motor
units. The reiever unit weighs only 2 OZ including the Fans but since it is
intended for R/C Blimps it has to be modified for most plane uses.
Now here's the great part... ONLY $12.95. Buy as many as you want because
at this price you an afford to hack em up for all sorts of projects.
Admittedly there is only one frequency but with the amount of fun you will
be having your friends are going to have to buy their own to get a turn
anyway!
-> See the review in the April Issue on Model Airplane News!!! p. 112
-> I had this figured out before MAN did wile doing research for my own
micro reciever unit but there are a number of good add-ons that make it
an even better unit.
-Relays, remove the coil, place two magnets on either side, it will pull
when energized depending on direction of current flow
-Mini-6 motors from Hi-Line (see address at end)
-Muscle Wires from MONDO-TRONICS (see address at end)
The Specs on these are amazing!
--MUSCLE WIRES--
<quote>
Q: How much power do Muscle Wires use?
A: The power needed to activate a wire depends on its diameter, length,
and the surrounding conditions. The table below gives typical current
levels for "room temperature" conditions. Power can be increased, but
once the wire has fully shortened, power should be reduced to prevent
overheating.

25 microns = 0.001 inch
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How long do Muscle Wires last?
A: When used in the three to five percent range under proper conditions
Muscle Wires can run for millions of cycles. Often, other parts of a
device will fail or need adjusting long before the Muscle Wire does.

-This is from the mondo-tronics produt guide recieved after a request was
placed at the mondo tronics WWWeb site @ mondo.com or email info(at)mondo.com
I have done some preliminary tests in this wire and while results look
promising, the output speed could never be counted on to be fast enough for
a pattern or stunt plane. The strength is incredible, There are springs
available which I have recieved samples of which will greatly increase in
tension and length but are very slow. (Landing gear anyone?).
--Micro sized motors-- (what started this whole newletter business anyway)
Micro Mo:
Micro Mo Electronics is a Florida based firm manufacturing tiny motors,
most coreless servo, camera, and other motors made in the US have good
chance of coming from them.
The following is a list of the motors most applicable to this newsletter
although they do make motors up to Speed 600 size.(which are nowhere near
as powerfull as some Speed 600 Graupners)
DC Micromotors
All measurements in Millimeters (.025 in) Weight in Ounces (OZ)
Weight does not include Gearhead.
Gearhead weight varies to Ratio, Ratios from 3:1 to 154368:1
Voltages 3, 6, 12 and some above.

1628 | 16 | 28 | 10.0 !!! | | Planetary 16
2444 | 24 | 44 | 33.0 | ? | Planetary 23,30,32,38
For Comparison:
Speed 280 | 24 | 32 | 11.0 | 1.5 |
speed 300 | 24 | 32 | 38.0 | |
The 2324CR is smaller and more powerfull than the Speed 280
The 1628 Brushless is WAY smaller and almost as powerfull.
I do not have all info as all I have are several Faxes and a chart from
MicroMo. I assume that they would rather deal in volume than if each person
went directly to them.
I will be establishing an account but will only be willing to distribute
them only in Canada and only if I can sell them for the same price or
less than their single unit price.
For starters I will only sell the 1016, 1319, 1331 and 1628 B.
US sales would only be possible if e/mail and a money order were sent
first.
Pricing will be available upon request in a week or so and will be
included next month.
--REALLY TINY SERVOS--
RCD HS-60 Super Micro Servo from Hitec-RCD
size: 1 x 1 x .5 Inches (minus Horn and mounting brackets)
this is about .15" smaller than the standard micro
Weight: 13.3 as opposd to a Miro's 17.8 grams
Torque: 16 oz/in (meagre but more than enough for small models)
Should be available from most RCD dealers soon
--HIGH POWER CAPACITORS--
-> Since batteries can weigh a fair amount, an alternate source of power for
small planes has been found to be Capacitors (or Condensors). They are very
light and new ones have appeared with plenty of power in a case that weighs
less than 5-10grams (1/6-1/3OZ). The following is some info I found on a
US source, Possible Canadian distributors would be Newark Elec. and
Electrosonic, both based in the Toronto, ON area. I don't know of any UK
distributors.
In the January/February catalog from DIGIKEY,(1-800-344-4539) on page
211, are the Panasonic Series Gold Capacitors.
These are electric double layer capacitors.
Voltage Nominal Diameter Length Price
Rating Capacitance (mm) (mm) $US (EACH)
(Farads)
2.5 1.0 8 22 $3.98
2.5 1.5 12.5 23 $4.46
2.5 2.2 12.5 23 $4.72
2.5 3.3 12.5 23 $5.01
2.5 4.7 12.5 35 $5.87
2.5 10.0 18.0 35 $8.37
All of the above are round with 2 leads exiting one end.
5.5 1.0 21.5 18 $7.12
This one is short and round with 2 leads on the bottom
5.5 3.3 42.5 (square)15mm thick $13.91
-This info courtesy of:
"Douglas R. Glosson glossondr.34edg(at)banyan.usafa.af.mil"
My tip of the month: if you are looking for 50Mah batteries, try hacking
apart an old electronics item.(well, more than 5 years old is old for stuff
like that) I found a 3.6V battery 50Mah and a 4.7farad Capacitor in an old
Modem. These batteries are most often used for battery backup.

2.5 4.7 12.5 35 $5.87

My tip of the month: if you are looking for 50Mah batteries, try hacking
apart an old electronics item.(well, more than 5 years old is old for stuff
like that) I found a 3.6V battery 50Mah and a 4.7farad Capacitor in an old
Modem. These batteries are most often used for battery backup.
