The labeling on this fan says it's 24V DC brushless. OK it has three wires, but it runs on 12V DC using the black and red wire. It appears that the windings are with one continuous wire from pole to pole with three poles connected to the PC board and one pole not connected to the board.
What would the white wire be used for?
Would this motor be a basis for application in a model airplane?
Will be grateful for comments to understand this motor even as is.

David: that motor is a 2 pole brushless. Unfortunately, it can't be used with our ESC's, as they are all based on 3 poles (or multiples of 3). A CD ROM motor has 9 poles on the stator. An LRK (AXI, etc) has 12. 4 just don't work for us.

<edit> just a guess here, but I believe the white wire is a back EMF sense for the controller.

.This is very similar to the fans I use for the bell.I get stator material from larger dc motors, rewind, change the magnets.

I believe the white wire is a rpm sense.

tlyee63 is likely right in that the white wire is a RPM sensor feedback. On most computer fans that is what the 3rd wire is used for.
Has anyone looked at these fans for diy brushelss motors (with a rewind). they are cheep and easy to get a hold of.

Thanks for the replies. As to the white wire used for feedback, there is a sensor aimed between two of the stator poles.
So the reason the motor runs, using the red and black wires is because the brushless controller is on the PC board fastened to the motor. I'm still puzzled by the fourth stator pole as the other three are connected to the PC board.
As this motor has a great deal of plastic in its construction and, as designed does not generate a lot of heat, it would probably not hold up to higher heat if it was convertable.
One last question: How would you define, or describe the continuous appearing cylinder magnet, installed in the bell, used in this motor?

Stators having 4,8,10,12 teeth/slots can be used in 3phase motors, however, you need 3 stators:
