Great Planes has just introduced the "new" Real Flight G3....Its a damn shame they cannot recognize the buyers of the G and the G2, and just give an upgrade for $$$$ whatever! They want another $249...
3D is the thing and "RAPE" is in the air!
I'm sorry GP, and Tower.....You won't get my bucks!
You show no loyalty to your customers that have paid dearly for you S*** that has been overpriced....GP and Tower you can remove me from your cheesy mailing list...Example: My neighbor gets a $20 discount on his $50 order...I get $20 on $500....Whats up with that crap????
You two bedfellows can shove it!!!

Sunspot,
Can you provide a link to this "G3" version of the RealFlight sim?
From what I see, the program is made by knifeedge.com and not Great Planes. On the company's web site, I can only find reference to G2 and below. The only thing that looks like "3D" is the fact that they have newer 3D rendered flying fields available. And Great Planes does advertise that one of their packages comes with an extra "3D flying field" as a bonus.
And depending upon what version of RealFlight you now own, these are available.
I don't think Tower Hobbies, Great Planes, or any other outlet for RealFlight software is calling the shots on what versions get free-upgrades or when an older version is no longer upgradeable.
If you can post a link to this G3 version, I'd like to see it.

I'm with Sunspot. It's obvious there is a marriage between GP and Knife Edge or the sim wouldn't be full of Great Planes aircraft to fly. How many SIG models, World Models, or GWS models are there? They also continually ignore their customers. Jim Bourke who owns this board is a key player at Knife Edge and has polled this board for suggestions that obviously fell on deaf ears. Now they are pushing a new product that isn't even finished, there's no Helis, to get is out the door for the Christmas rush. The biggest request folks have made is a way to get their own models in the sim. This has yet to happen. I would like to be able to get some of the foamies I fly or some of the scratchbuilt models I fly into the sim. I currently have no interest in flying a Great Planes giant P-51. If I want to fly the Kustom Kaos I built I have to turn to a public domain program to fly it in. It doesn't seem like their upgrade is is really worth it to existing users. They'll have to find a new crop of newbies to soak.

You guys are paying hundreds of dollars for a sim that you can't even import models into? Did I read that right?

G2 is fine with me. The aircraft selection or lack there of, is not worth the money they are asking for G3. G3 is definitly not on my christmas list.

Funny, but I just ordered AeroFly Pro 2 days ago... Maybe I was smarter than I gave myself credit for?
I have been very happy with FMS ($40 for a USB Interface), but all the 'experts' seem to agree AFP is tops in realistic post-stall physics (read most 3D manuvers), so I figured I'd go for it. I've never been overly impressed with RF when I've tried it at any of the Hobby Shops or a buddy's house. I thought FMS was equal is realism, if not as good graphically (read requires lees computer HP), and I've never flown a RF model that came close to anything I fly regularly...

I'm sure glad there's more than one soapbox around here ..... Not to worry , Tower's interest is in serving the beginners , who don't have a clue .... sounds like our politicians....screw the "common" man...take care of your pals....

If you would read their web page for the G3, you would see that current G2 registered owners get a discount on purchasing G3 ! I do agree that there should have been a small upgrade from G2 to G3 fee instead ! All of your current add-ons will work with G3 though.

I sold my G2 earlier this year and used the money to buy Reflex XTR.
XTR has awesome graphics! It's very photo realistic. If Real Flight indicated that they were working on something comparable and that there would be an upgrade path I would have stayed with them but my e-mails went unanswered.
Reflex on the other hand gave a FREE upgrade to it's customers who purchased the older 4.0 version. They did not even charge for the cost of the media (CD) or for shipping!
Now that's outstanding customer service!!! :D :D :D
Come on GP/Knife Edge look at your compettition and get a clue, you're loosing customers.
If you have not seen their sim I urge you to check out this demo video, it's a .wmv file:
XTR Raptor Demo (http://rcgroups.com/gallery/data/500/16712Raptor_Emile.wmv)
The actual sim is much better. The quality had to be sacraficed for video compression and size.
Here's their web site:

Wow! Thanks for the video cyber pilot.. Is there any for planes? I heard that reflex was good but that exceeded my every expectation. Sure is far better than G2 huh.. Realflight will die a natural death with such stiff competition and lousy customer relations.

Foamyfoam,
No problem, glad to do it. I have not seen a demo for planes and I'm not sure if I can record on myself but I'll take a look.
Please understand that I think G2 is a great product. I owned it and learned to fly on it. Also keep in mind that G2 has some features that are not available in XTR. For instance the auto zoom feature keeps your model in reasonable viewing distance where as XTR is more realistic in the sense that the model will become a barely visable spec if you let it get away from you. You can not move the pilot position around with XTR, it's fixed. Also, I enjoyed the virtual instructor but felt that there were too few lessons and they never offered more even in the add-on packs. Multiplayer was cool in G2, I used that a few times; XTR doesn't do that. So to be fair you need to balance your individual needs and choose the sim that best suits you.

Any of you try the free FMS? Dozens of free planes online plans for cable/computer connection or fly with keyboard or joystick. Just search for FMS.
reasonably realistic and it costs nothing. Also sights that have software to modify planes (different stall speeds and motor sizes different settind for control throughs and ways to make your own plane.

Lemme see;
This thread starts off with Spots rant (close to a warning BTW), and then heads into general sim country.
Nothing to do with Foamies, but could be punted into either Vendors or Sims.

I had seen RF at the local hobby shop and the graphics appeared to be the work of a B-rated video game, sorta like watching a PONG game from the 70's !!!! I bought REFLEX XTR and it is awesome!

Reflex RULES !!! :D :D :D
I cannot belive this thing !
I can't believe that I am over 40 years of age and reacting this way to a sim !
The physics are excellent on Reflex.
And the extra models are free, the extra scenery is free and there are getting more and more and more..... of them.
Reflex groups are forming everywhere !
Keep you G2's and get reflex XTR.
G3 is not worth a dime !
The product is incomplete, more than likely undertested, probably buggy and does not offer anything new.
TRY OUT REFLEX XTR !
It WILL make you change your SIM !
This is not an Ad and I have no connections to the company.

Well I just got !@#$% by G2 today, my G2 disk is so beat up from taking it in and out of the CDdrive over the last two years that I called them for a replacement disk. Guess what? They replied that they don't carry that version of G2 (version 2.00.219) any more and could not make me a new disk! I will have to spend $90 to "upgrade" to the "newest" version of G2! All I wanted was a new disk! My G2 controller still works fine, But now I have to buy their latest controller! Here is the thought process of the G2 marketing dept: Lets force them to put the CD's in the drive every time they want to play, and then make it so they can't make a backup copy! Yea! and then we will discontinue that version of G2 and tell them they need to spend lots of money to upgrade to the latest rev of THE SAME VERSION when the CD bites the big one! But wait, There's more! Lets tell them they can upgrade to the new G3 for $200 and get a whole $50 off because I've spent so much money with them already! Oh Boy!

I would just rather find a patch so i did not have to use the disk. I have lost my disks but i still have G2 in my PC. i just cannot use it because it is asking me to put my disk in for confermation. AAARRRGGHH! Thing is i did not have to put the disk in for probbaly 100 times i went and used the sim. Then all of a sudden it wants the disk. If i have to buy new disks to use a sim I will NOT be buying anything from RF I will go and get the REFLEX SIM.

KUshal, GameXCopy will do what you want - makes an image of the software on your hard drive. If all you want is a copy of the Cd for legal p backup purposes, you need to use a burn SW like Alcohol 120.
You ever fly in the Shuswap?? Where do you flyin Kamloops?

G2 is plain crap, you have to put discs in 24/7 or else your sim will crash, cause knifedge software thinks that they have software worth protecting yah right, wrong flight phsyics, crappy looking models and ahem more money, aerofly pro only ask's for a simple device you have to plug in no disc crap, as far as I've seen g3 is crap the yak looks like a sukhoi and just like someone else said its just eye candy.

I didn`t have to have mine in 24/7. But every once in awhile it would ask for the disk. I lost them and now have no way to use my G2.
