hs-55 jittery, defective potentiometer

I sent a couple of very jittery hs-55 back to Hitec and they replaced them with new ones (it said "defective potentiometer" on the paper they sent back to me). I've had a couple of other servos go bad the same way - and Hitec replaced those too. Great service and I appreciate it.

What causes a defective potentiometer? Is there a way I can fix it myself?
