I went to the IhobbyExpo in Chicago last weekend. Had a great time and got to play with both XTR and G3.

Here is what I learned about G3 (Talked to Great Planes rep):

- Upgrade for G2 users, no. You will buy G3 which will have a rebate inside where your send in with your G2 registration info. Rebate $50! :(

- NO HELI's. Well know fact, they say they'll be avail after the first of the year.

- Graphics looked good. But NOT as good as XTR, and the physics for the planes I flew felt akward. I didn't go into look @ control surfaces, etc of the models, but they felt sluggish.

- More graphics, based on what I saw - I would NOT upgrade. The guy stated the planes have 2x resolution of G2. I couldn't tell much difference.

- I flew on XTR and G3 w/in 10 mins of each other. My opinion is that XTR was nicer in terms of graphics, and physics (Heli & Airplanes).

$50 bucks huh? :( But unless they ask for the old G2 back, it really means a copy of G3 for $50. ebay should be filled with G2 systems. I can't see upgrading...

I'm not sure I understand your reply. It doesn't mean a copy of G3 for $50.

The cost of G3 lets assume is $199 (guessing), you get a $50 rebate if you own G2, so you'll pay $149 for G3.

With that, though, its still not worth it if you ask me based on what I saw with a comparison of XTR and G3.

And then you eBay G2 so maybe you "net" a copy of G3 for 50-100

Oh, ok. I see what you are saying now. What does G2 go for on Ebay with 2 add-on packs. I'm interested in selling mine.

Nevermind, found it on ebay. I guess I can just sell my G2 with the add-ons there.

I flew G3 at Ihobby too and I respectfully disagree with Buckey29. I felt that the physics on G3 rocked! They were dead-on for 3D flight.

As for the graphics, the guy working the booth showed me things that G3 does that no other simulator has- did you see the objects reflect off of the fuselage? How about the shadows on the airplanes? Plus the size of the fields and the actual 3d moving objects...I thought these were really cool. Made me feel like I was flying at home.

The helis are a real bummer...wish they would include them in this release!

Flyn4fun - well thats interesting to hear another perspective. I flew a couple planes, and just didn't think they felt right, but then again I fly helis more in real life.

I didn't see the reflections that you are speaking about, but I guess if I didn't notice it then, it wasn't that noticable? Does that make sense. Not sure thats a selling feature to me. I did see the shadows though.

What were the 3d moving objects your talking about? OTher than other RC vehicles?

Agreed on the heli thing. bummer.

Just sold my G2 on ebay for £106. Only bought it for £116 on ebay a couple of month back.

Ordered G3 from America for £120 not a bad upgrade price.

I banked on G2 prices falling on the G3 release.

Only draw back is not having the software for a month!!!!

I have a high spec dell laptop, just hope it is high enough spec for the new program!!!

What spec computer will we need?

I have P4 3.2 Ghz laptop with 64meg video and 512 meg of ram.

I am sure this will be well within the limits!?!
