Edit October 8:
Sorry for having spread misinformation, but I was a bit too optimistic about the final pricing. After negotiating with RFM, the Surprise 5 will cost $590; it will not be available with flaps. The Surprise 6 will cost $665 without flaps and $695 with flaps. This still means uncompromising Surprise quality and performance at a reasonable cost. --Dieter Mahlein, ShredAir.

Given the momentum for F5B events generated by this year's competitions in Virginia, we are negotiating with RFM about making full Surprise quality and performance available at a lower cost.

RFM and we agree that we can do this with Surprise-5 and -6 models which, incidentally, will be FAI-legal again in 2005. If we import these planes (depends on demand), they will come without wing servos, but the tail servo will be installed, wired, and linked; modifying the mold to omit this servo would not reduce production cost very much.
As I said, these models will be built with the same materials, techniques, and standards as today's Surprise; and with reinforced fuselages upon request and at no extra cost. Here are some stats:

Surprise 6: Wingspan 65.4 inches; airfoil MH-30; largest prop 18"; price NOT $595 but $665

Surprise 5: Wingspan 67.7 inches; airfoil RG-14; largest prop 18"; price NOT $525 but $590

Great idea Dieter! Sounds like some creative thinking that will benefit many. Most guys don't really need the latest and greatest airframe to learn to fly F5B.

Good luck,
Lenny

Sweet....

Can you get flaps on these?

Dieter,

Am definitely interested. Will they be designed for 10-cell? 27 cells? I have heard about another plane being designed specifically for F5B with 16-cells, 200+ amps. Also, how do I pick an airfoil (MH30 vs. RG14)?

thanks,

What is the reason the older 5 and 6 will be legal in 2005? Just curious.

Probably because the lighter 16 cell setups will keep the wing loading below the FAI max of 75 g/dm2.

I think I "need" a 6 with a reinforced fuse. I'm in!
