Is this one of the big styrofoam gliders that are sold in toy stores?
FlyRC did an article on just such a conversion in the August 2004 issue:

Converting toy-store gliders to electric RC

I don't see any reason why it would not.
Hand throw the glider. Get it all set, then mark where the CG is. That is what you need to reset after you put in the battery and electronics. Then add the stuff and go fly it.

One problem with the foam glider is how will you launch it? May not be strong enough even for a gentle hi-start. A Spirit would be a better choice if you really want to thermal. The use of the spoilers will help you land it in a small field.
The size of the field determines you launch and land space. Once you are in the air, you will range out beyond the field in search of thermals and while you ride those thermals.
What is around the field?

there are basically three parks i can fly at becasue i am limited to my bike (im 13 by the way) the 1st one is next to my house, it is a cricket pitch with a couple of pine trees and a tennis club, around that i streets and houses.
the second is about 2 minutes away from the first and has a hockey pitch and a soccer pitch which is quite big.this has a golf club next to it and a tennis club. trees are also surrounding this! the last one is the biggest because there are two footy ovals. but this is seperated by a club house! so this isnt the best spot. (i crashed my first plane the fire bird xl about 4 years ago into a tree and it got stuck there for 4 days!)
i persuaded my mum to order the spirit, i dont know if it was a mistake or not!
i also strenghted the wings of the free flight model and cut out the control surfaces
