Greetings,
For the purposes of a nautical display I need to make a lot of smoke in a
model yacht, and to have this emission controlled by radio. The smoke must
be safe, that is not endanger the boat. Any ideas gratefully received. I am
in the UK.

There was some discussion of this several months ago so you
might try google groups. As I recall, the best choices were
some method using theatrical smoke juice. (Which is pretty
non-toxic but does have a smell - like parafin to me.) Or an
ultrasonic mister (or several) - someone suggested a home
brew method using a piezo transducer and an oscilator
circuit based on a 555 plus a few other parts.
The theater smoke would probably produce the most smoke.
I haven't tried it but I think a ceramic power resistor as a heater
might do the trick. (Or maybe a tube heated by a halogen light
bulb.) It would take more power than the mister approach, I'm
sure. -Wm

Depending on the size of the boat but, several (25) years ago I had great
success using the smoke generator kits found in the model railroad
department.

Nicrone wire, like the kind in toasters) and an on/off stitch for a
oil pump and the wire. Auto transmission fluid works best.

er yeeess that would seem to be a problem...on the surface anyway. is there
room for a couple of batt packs? if so then one could get a car cigar
lighter and feed it 12v and smoke fluid. hth

You can probably find more clues here.

Get with the model railroad crowd. They have smoke generators that can be
adapted to boats and run on battery. I once used a pair in the stacks of
the old plastic "Blue Devil" Destroyer kit. Worked great!
