Well, it finally happened. Robin Hood (AKA the RC Archer) got his SS stuck in the top of a large poplar tree. I spent one whole day using the bow and arrow to launch a line (monofilament spooled out from a spinning reel) to thread a rope then used to shake the branch. No amount of shaking would dislodge the plane. I let a week pass and the plane remained.
I gathered the merry men (and woman) and together we were able to recover the plane. BTW the plane was impaled on a short branch through the wing which is why the other attempts failed. It sustained minor damage to the tail and none to the equipment.

5. Official consultants and observers, offering support.
6. First layer of tools for recovery effort.

7. Attempt #1, the extendable tree pruning hook. Too short.

8. Shaun ties himself into tree before Attempt #2, the high pressure stream of water.

9. High pressure stream of water diffuses among branches and leaves. wetting everything, accomplishing nothing.

10. In preparation of Attempt #3, Doug delivers blunted arrows and bow to treeman and retrieves fire extinguisher.

12. Attempt #4--no joy. No hits.

13. For Attempt #5, extendable fiberglass pole is lashed to extendable tree pruning device. Pole is now estimated to be .3 miles long.

Wonderful. Why were you flying that close to the trees in the first place?

We are not called the Green Mountain State for nothing. Except for some farmland in the Champlain Valley the rest of the state is forested. You are rarely more than a control twitch from a tree. We have had three other airplane/tree encounters since this post. We are beginning to get good at this recovery business.

On the bright side that fall colors are to die for.

Hey GrnMtnFlyer what part of the state are you in? I could have used your expertise last time I got my cub stuck in a tree. I had to resort to throwing sticks and rocks at it!

I just try to throw other planes at them when they get stuck up there. I like to compound my problems.

I've used potato guns before mostly to recover the gear as there is not much usually left of the plane after the onslaught.......are you guys familiar with potato guns???

I once got my Protech 2M powered glider stuck in a tree (dodging an aggresive bird which was trying to grab the elevator). First attempt was to challenge a bunch of kids to kick a football at it to knock it down. 30 minutes later, kids leave, exhausted LOL. I head off to a mall, and buy a laundry scrubbing brush and some lightweight clothes line, to try and emulate a goucho with my bolero :)

After stuffing my arm trying, a lucky shot loops the offending branch, and my otherwise unharmed plane speared down through the foliage to land on the prop, creasing the fuse, breaking the prop and the wing joiner! But I recovered it, and my arm eventually got better!

It's been so long since I've seen a good potato gun in action.
Whoever thought that puppy up? Genius.

I still break out the potato cannon up at the cottage. Great fun.
