Curious as to what the general factory settings are for the 2nd gear shift
point from bottomout?(2.5 TMaxx Tranny)
How many turns out (from bottom-screwed all the way in) are they set at?

Hah!

My set screw was floating around in the gearbox!

OK , well let word if differently...
Once you have/had your tranny adjusted at a relatively decent shift point,
approximately how many turns out is the 2nd gear shift point from bottomout?
=)

Mate, if your truck is shifting into second and back *at all* then I would
down tools and simply enjoy.

FWIW, I find it pretty hard to even see the thing down the hole. Since I
pulled the gearbox apart and put the screw "about halfway in" (technical
talk there) my Maxx has been shifting into second after about 1.5 - 2
seconds or WOT on level ground, which is good enough for me.

About 7 turns. But, unless the thing's fallen apart, you don't want to
run that adjusting screw all the way down. The tension spring
underneath it is very easy to crush.

That is the problem, it isn't hitting 2nd at all. I have turned it out
several turns, with no luck, so either its messed up or needs to come out
further. I wasn't sure how far it tolerates. I just didn't want to over do
it and end up with a grub screw floating around in the tranny.
Thanks for your response.

There is no humanly-useful stock setting. Apparently it is set with a
tension meter rather than by turns.

Safest method is to back the grup screw out until its flush with the
threads. Then adjust in until the shiftpoint comes back up to a
normal position.

Taking it all the way down can damage the spring and thereby make the
setting impossible or unstable.

More common reasons would be:
* too rich
* loosing RPM somewhere (slipping clutch shoes, slipper clutch,
stripping/melted spur)
* gearing changes like taller tires
* resistance changes like higher-drag terrain
* weight changes like alum/steel parts
