Anybody build a Bare Bones from Modelair-tech? If so what did you power it with and what else can you tell me about it?

A friend owned one, and have seen several fly. Very lightweight, all were pretty stable at speed, nice and fast without being scary. It's a pylon trainer, not a true racer, according to the designer. Speed 400 6vt on 7x500-600 cells does nicely, CAM 4.7x4.7 or 5x5 are best for speed, 6x3 folder for slower speeds. All I've seen were nicely aerobatic, too. Hard to beat the price, just don't expect to race Skats and the like.

MKH thanks for the input, I built it for a sport plane, like you said can't beat the price. The kit builds very easily.

I flew the Bare Bones today four times. What a great flying model. Hard to believe all that speed from a motor that cost 9 bucks and a kit that cost 25 bucks. The kit was very easy to build and I highly recomend it to anybody wanting a cheap pylon type model. I understand that technology has surpassed this model for competition, but it's a ball.

It is very aerobatic, everthing a aileron/elevator ship can do. So far I have flown mine with 7 cell 600AE on a stock 400 motor. It weights 13oz ready to go, get started you will enjoy it.

I am going to be building one soon, probably in the spring. How areobatic is it. I have Model Airtech's Tumblewatt and like that very much.
I will probably use a permax 400BB and 8x600ae for mine.

I have been flying this model about every other day now, it's just one great airplane. Good speed, cheap kit, easy to build, I would highly recommend this for a fun plane.

J, did you use the standard 6volt 400, 7 cell, CAM 5x5 setup? Just curious. 13 oz is a great weight! Sounds well done. MKH

Yep sure did. The weight I was surprised with, I checked it on to scale to make sure. The only down with this model is it's light weight but will not hold up to abuse.

Hey !!! http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/smile.gif

How about the Meagerwatt???. There is a review on it right here in the e zone.

Sounds like another fun Pylon trainer type plane.

The ellipstick is the best for easy build acrobatic fun. Juyst look at the pic. There are only a few sticks.
I have seen them fly. Seem slower than the Tumblewatt but just as agile. http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/biggrin.gif

This plane seems to be popular right now.

I just started mine. I have about 200 flights on my Tumblewatt and that holds up great. They hold up good just as long as you don't smash it. When you wreck with one of these you just have a bunch of sticks laying all over the place.

J Bergsmith, when I get mine done I will be powering it with a Permax 480, 5-5 racing prop and 8x600ae or 8x800nimh. Will it handle the extra power and a little more wing loading.
I know my tumblewatt does nicely with a 480.
I don't know when I'll get it done. Its flying season know. I'll work on it on rainy and winding days.

Motocalc says for barebones a 480 motor geared 2.5:1 with a 8x8 on 8 600ae's is a good combo. It claims only 7.3 amps static and 9 oz thrust and 717 ft/min climb with 48 mph top speed.
That would be one sweet flying sport plane, and unless I come up with something better is how I'm going to equip mine.

I have about 35 flights on the Bones at this point. Seems to be holding up great, very happy with this design.

Ryan,
I think the plane would handle it fine. Sounds like a great combo. I think you would get more than 48mph, my guess would be in the 60's. It stinks trying to build during flying season, but the Bones builds quickly.

For fun I punched into motocalc6 the 8x600ae, permax 480 with 5x5 combo and here's the results: 8.3 amp, 4.5 oz thrust, 274 ft/min climb and 41 mph top speed.

Would'nt it be nice if every club had a radar gun? It would sure be nice to put some of these theoretical numbers to a accurate real world test.

Dean,
It would be neat to verify the top speed. I think you would get a better top speed.
