Funny thing, right before that crash, I predicted it was going to crash :(

What was that?
A plane that fired a rocket engine mid flight?

Yup.. Sandals and Shredair hat. Although I was filming, I was zoomed in, and as fast as that model flies, you have to anticipate it's climb, so I missed the impact.

Okay, how about a little more details here?
I'm going to guess that was supposed to be 'Glamorous Glennis' the X1?
I would be interested in knowing how the aircraft was flown before igniting the rocket (tractor engine in nose, ducted fan?), where exactly the rocket engine was located and how it was affixed to the airframe, and also the output of the rocket.
I'm thinking that either
1. The thrust vector on the rocket forced the nose hard over by pushing the tail up, but I think you would have seen a more 'cartwheel effect' if it had been extreme.
2. The elevator went into 'unporting' which created a nose dive (see Ernie Gann's 'Fate Is The Hunter' story about his flight back from Hawaii to learn about 'unporting').
3. I think the rocket was way too powerful, and the airframe wasn't able to stand that sudden acceleration. Even the real X1 needed several rocket chambers to gradually speed up past Mach 1. I get a feeling this was akin to being kicked in the rear by a horse!
Still, interesting video. Thanks!

Read the SEFF 2004 event report, and you'll also find a video of this model being flown succesfully (I didn't include my crash coverage in the report). It's dropped from altitude by a very large (14'?) 4-engine B29, glided down, then the rocket motor fires up and climbs back up to altitude. The model has been flown dozens of times at shows, and I'm pretty certain this isn't the first one they've had to rebuild.. :)

Well I'd guess it might have been carried to altitude on another model, then dropped to glide down and fire up it's rocket motor on a low pass. That's the way I've seen these done before, and done very well, with a perfect parabolic flight back up to heing under rocket power.
There's a rocket tube in the back end of the wreckage and no sign of a fan.

great video's at those site, thanx.
The X1 is very simple and it should be a problem to rebuild it......

Mac has re-built the X-1 more than once. And he also re-built the bomber recently.

I took these pics at SEFF this year. Note that Mac has a model of his model... it's electric!
