View Full Version : Cool F3J and 100" models - What's good?

Hi all,

Seeking opinions to help support a buying decision.

I'm considering an F3J and a 100" ship. I don't plan to compete, just want some high-performance toys. Actually, I want to put the F3J on big slopes (read "mountains") and be able to range way out for thermals. In other words, I'm seeking that nonexistent combination of light thermal capability with great penetration ;-)

After a little comparative research, I've got an early bias toward the Graphite, the Hybrid, or the Omega 3 as the F3J plane.

For 100" I'm eyeing the 2.5 m version of either the Organic or Silent Dream (electric).

Would appreciate comments on any of these models.

All are of similar size in their class, and have similar planform, airfoil, loading, AR, controls, and overall config.

Concerning airfoils, 3 of the 5 use the MH-32 which I've heard some good things about, notably its speed envelope and responsiveness to flap input.

I'd also prefer a model with some contest history behind it, figuring the models that competitive pilots are flying should be some indicator of performance.

One thing that "worries" me is the price on the Omega 3 - - it actually seems a bit low ($530 at NSP). I'm not one to auto-reject a bargain, but if anyone is aware of something negative about this model, would sure appreciate your input. And concerning procurement, anyone know sources with best prices, availability?

Last issue, then I'll knock off - I want the option of an electric motor while not sacrificing performance when flown as a pure glider. Should I buy an electric version, and just remove the motor to fly as a pure glider, or get a glider, then chop the nose off and adapt to power? I'm willing to compromise motored performance in order to retain performance as a glider, so am leaning toward buying a pure glider - - - but the notion of hacking-up a shiny new fuselage for the motor adaptation isn't too appealing. Bottom line, what's the worst that can happen when converting a glider to electric? >>> How’s that for an open-ended question?!? ;-)
