Hello,
I'm a total newbie with regards to sailplanes and thermal lift, so it occured to me that the more lift, the easier it would be to try. I have a couple of 48" flying wings that I repaired(don't ask) , that have no motors anymore. I also have a kelly mini that I've never flown. So I was thinking to myself....." self, there's an active, live volcano on the other side of the island.....what better thermal lift could one ask for". What do you guys think? would this be a :D ....or a  .
Thanks
Lono

It does not have to go high........you can stand on the ledge and look down at the lava from several different spots, even see the hot magma going into the ocean.
I'm gonna try it.....I'll take some vid when I do

Darn, don't have any active volcanos in our neighborhood. Sounds like fun though. Probably lots of thermal activity. :D
I guess if you crash you won't have to worry about picking up the pieces and putting it back together.
We're looking forward to hearing a report. Don't get too close. ;)

And needless to say, if you lose the glider somewhere down the hill, DO NOT climb down to go looking for it! ;)

my experience with thermalling near large heated areas has not been what you would expect!
if there is a large amount of lift, there is also a very large amount of air trying to feed the rising air which makes for a very active envirment
if you can glide in from WELL above you will find good lift but if you hope to enter from down low,you will be thrown out of the lift or not be able to penetrate into it
try to imagine throwing a cigarette paper into a blazing camp fire compared to a small bed of coals in the early morning
yes,all the facters are present to produce great lift but i doubt that you would be able to make use of it without it showing you,who is boss!
where ever the heat takes you is where it will go
my 2 cents xtc

Hey! Give it a shot. Us guys that don't have any volcano activity would be interested in the results of your experiment.
There is a certain amount of risk to every great adventure.
Watch out for air temperature!

hehe....that video would be worth a million laughs.....
no offense...hehe
extremely hot air and foam......
I know!!! Bag them wings with Kevlar...and...and....then after a few flights...you'll have lost foam wing cores!!!!
hehe. just kidding

Hello,
I'm a total newbie with regards to sailplanes and thermal lift...
I guess I didnt realize you were that much of a newbie about sailing/sloping.....sorry to confuse you about wing bagging and fiberglass techniques.....It just stuck me as funny flying foam in extreme heat.

My 2 cents, it will probably cost you a plane so don't do it just for style points on this board.
But if you do.........I MUST see the video! Regardless of the outcome it will be spectacular.

Artmonster,
After finally getting my foot-all of it-out of my mouth, I owe you an apology. I honestly didn't know there was such a thing as wing bagging. I guess I should do a little research before opening my mouth about something that I know nothing about. I'm sorry,

Apology accepted, it's all good.
So now when can I come and be an unwelcome guest for three weeks on your couch and take advantage of some of those beautiful and dramatic seaside slopes with incredible lift you have there? :D ;) :D lol.
peace.

Michael,
If ever destiny brings you to the big island, PM me here on the forum, and I'll style you out with the "real" hawaiian aloha, the kind most tourists never get the opportunity to enjoy. Thus far, 4 other forum members who came on vacation contacted me, we met, did alot of flying, REAL luaus, sightseeing not on the maps, and they went home with memories of Hawaii Nae very few in the world will ever experience. Consider it an open invitation.
Aloha

Not quite a volcano, but having one of these a few hundred yards from ya makes for some interesting thermal activity. As I found out.
