Obviously I have been posting to the wrong forum! Hopefully this new combat forum will deserve to be upgraded from a trial forum to a more permanent status.
I have been smitten with those cheap Firebird and Fighterbird replacement wings at my LHS for a while now. After much expirementation and good clean fun I stumbled upon a great new combat formula that is affordable enough to allow real RC combat.
I have a disdain for any class of mechanical competition that has numerous specific rules that mandate everyone to use essentially identical equipment. Besides making for boring competition it keeps people away if they don't already own suitable equipment or care for the narrow formula. Overly strict/narrow formulas also invite cheating and cost escalation in order to gain small advantages.
My new combat formula goes something like this:
1)All planes must use a standard 1.1m Firebird XL/Fighterbird wing without significant modification
2)Combat heats last 4 minutes - You lose a point for landing before 4 minutes and you gain a point for being the last down
3)You get 5 points for forcing an opponent down and 10 points for demolishing an opponent in flight
That's it, you can create any type of plane you want. There's little point in outspending your opponents only to lose fancy batteries or motors. This formula leans towards old-school can motors and leftover batteries. Don't fly anything you can't afford to lose. Don't let a $6 sp400 take out your $60 motor and $80 battery.
Here's a few designs that immediately come to mind:
